Seriously, I think most US gun owners are well aware of the ramifications of the discharge of their guns.
If someone seriously posts "Burgled last night--how do I get blood off my 911" feel free to point out my naivety on the subject.

Here's a cheepy idea: hook up motion sensors on the perimeters through a light sensor switch and a on/off switch to a chime in the house.
After dark if someone sneaks around the chime will let you know.
