1987 911 Carrera
Hi,
I just bought my first 911, a 1987 Targa. It only came with one of the original keys with the Porsche logo and the built-in flashlight. The logo is missing and the light doesn't work. I don't have the original tag that identified the key number. Anyone know how I can get a duplicate "original" key from Porsche? Scott |

Buy a blank. Take it (and the original you have) to a locksmith.

Should not be a problem at all. As Noah stated any good lock smith can make a copy for you.

I went to the Porsche dealership and they looked at the VIN then cut me a brand new key off the computer. that was 20 years ago and the key is still good. The old one I could pull it out with the engine still running.

Thanks everyone. I also found this on the Porsche site:

Our sponsor sells replacement keys. And the previous posters are correct - I ordered one and had a local locksmith cut the blank from my existing key without any difficulties.
My locksmith also had blanks (ILco P05) so I had him cut a few of those as spares for less than $10. Key Blank with Porsche Crest Lighted Key Head, complete Pelican Part#: C-538-041-99N |

. . . PS, congratulations on your Targa! You will find this forum, and the fellow enthusiasts on it, very valuable resources. The forum search feature is a very good tool as well.

Good news, your key head separates from the actual key and can be replaced -- This link should take you to the part on Pelican's website https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/94453804101.htm?pn=944-538-041-01-M100 I've had no issues getting other keys cut by local locksmiths (at my mechanic's suggestion, went to an old-school locksmith who hand cut the new blank off of my original key -- haven't seen a reason to deal with Porsche to find the key # etc. Enjoy your targa! |

I ordered a replacement key from Keys4Classics a few years ago since they can decode the key from a picture. Later on I ordered one from my local dealership. I prefer the one I got from Porsche. The one I got from Keys4Classics is discolored from the finish rubbing off, I believe it is brass with some plating, whereas the OEM one is all steel. When I ordered from the dealership they wanted me to show proof of ownership. The key was cut at the HQ based on Porsche's records of the original key and arrived at my local parts desk in less than a week. If you order a key blank you will probably need to pay more for someone to duplicate it, and they will be duplicating the profile of a worn out original key. If you do have one cut locally, make sure you have a good blank. 99663744300 - Colored Emblem 94453844300 - Silver Emblem 92853763002 - Light Bulb

I have a few keys for my 911. The one in my pocket is worn from pocket wear, and use. It sometimes needs a bit of wiggling to make it work in the many locks on the car.
I went to my local dealership with my title, and ordered a new key. The VIN is on the title, and it came in pretty quickly. It has nice sharp edges and I put it away as my new master. I also have a new blank I can have cut from the master at a locksmith.
