Building out an oil system from scratch- would you follow the factory or go beyond?
Hello fellow Pelicans.
I'm gathering parts and doing research for swapping in a 3.2 engine into my short wheel base 912. I'm currently at the point where I'm deciding what parts to buy for the oil system and wanted to hear from those of you that might have upgraded your cars what you think the best approach for building the oiling system from scratch might be? Should I be looking for the factory oil tank or to the aftermarket like Peterson? Is the pass rear the best place to mount the tank, or will I be better off with it in the frunk? Are the Elephant Racing hardlines worth the cost, or should I look at the factory hardlines that run front to rear under the door? Do I go aftermarket (Like CSF) on the oil cooler (only planning on the pass front wheel well mounting location) and do I add electric fans? Looking stock and bolt in is not my priority. If I need to cut or fabricate I'm willing to do so to get the best cooling I can. So what would be the way to plumb this engine if you had to do it from scratch? |

If you are building a mainly street hotrod, I would go with stock Porsche parts. Much easier install, set up and cleaner appearance. Plus, you may be able to score used parts saving money.
Of course up to around '71 the oil lines went through the rocker panels, starting in '73 they went under the rockers. Another choice, would be the '72 setup, where the tank is in front of the rear wheel. Getting all those parts may be challenging however. IMO, the frunk option is best left to track cars, but others may chime in with their opinions. I went with a front cooler set up on my '71 using a modified Mazda cooler, Carrera tank, and SC oil lines and t-stat. ![]()

I’m dropping a 3.2 into my 67-912. I’m using the oil system from an SC with a Carrera front fender cooler. It’s not all together but I’m hoping this will be the easiest and most effective way to do the oil cooling.

I'd love to know what car the Mazda oil cooler came from. I'd also think that putting a peterson oil tank in the same area as a 72 would help with the plumbing and wheel clearance the oil lines need that the SWB wheel wells don't have the clearance for. Chris- Pretty familiar with that channel, and his recent videos gave me pause that I might be better off fabricating oil lines and tank locations rather than trying to modify the car to fit factory stuff. Any race car guys have opinions on what you'd do if you had to do it over? |
