Wiper motor runs continuously
Hello all, in my '71T, the wipers work correctly in the interval, slow, fast and off positions. However, when I pull the lever to activate the washer, the motor starts, but does not stop until I turn off the ignition switch. When I turn the ignition switch back on, the wipers will then move to the park position. Also, the pump doesn't activate when the lever is pulled. After researching this issue here, I've removed the wiper switch and cleaned it; and removed the 2 relays next to the wiper motor and cleaned them, but still get the same results. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for the help! dho |

I have the same issue with the wiper switch and intermittent. Anything that turns them on, they stay on.

I suppose the first question is, how are they meant to operate? are the the wipers meant to 'run on' for a period after you release the washer switch, and if so how? Could be a special relay with a delay release?, in which case I'd suspect this, Do you have a wiring diagram? Is this a US only or after market feature as my 73 only has an aftermarket intermittent wiper (but is a UK market car)

No No early Porsche had bells and whistles like that. When you turn the stalk switch off, the wipers should move to the park position and stop. You should test the relays. In fact, think of just replacing them if original. That is a lot of years for points to keep opening and closing. Overcurrent can cause them to fuse together, though when that happened to me on a truck's compressor relay they never released - had to disable the battery. Probably not the issue here.
The actions of the wiper are controlled by the stalk switch, but also by switches on the wiper parts, so the system can park the blade. If some contact in the park system fails, the power continues to the wiper motor. That's where I'd concentrate my investigation. That system is not part of the stalk switch, and is, alas, much harder to get at. When I had wiper issues with my '77, I just got a junkyard replacement. Pain to deal with all the way around. And its park system didn't work right - I have to return the stalk to off at the right time to get the blades to park where they should. Search here on this subject - someone and responders must have provided a lot of specific information. You can find and download wiring diagrams for later models. Any 2.7 or SC wiring diagram ought to help you get an idea of where things are. The early diagrams have a certain charm, but later ones are better for troubleshooting, focusing on systems. |

Believe that the lever contacts are worn in your steering column.
Try spraying WD40 in there and switch them on of several times |
