Two turbos, one for the bros and one for the... RUF build
I know a lot of guys have been following this build on Instagram so sorry to the Pelican family that i took me so long to post here. I have been pretty busy with customer work and engine builds and just havent had the time, but here goes
I think all of us here can agree that the Yellowbird is probably one of the most bada$$ cars ever built, I know some guys have built tributes, but I wanted to build the closet example I could using all Genuine Ruf parts I could get my hands on... 7 years ago I set out on my parts hunt, and with good luck and great relationships, have managed to put a pretty good collection together... But first I needed a chassis, so what better to start with then a one owner 88k mile 89.5 g50 car! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648583695.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648583695.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648583695.jpg |
aaaaaand 48 hours later we start with rear bumper fitment and some euro taillights
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648583839.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648583839.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648583839.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648583839.jpg |
Oh, this is going to be fun...!
|
Some quick paint work on new decklid, wing, and rear reflector

im here for the good time http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...ool_shades.gif

was a little disappointed in the fitment of the lights on the front bumper, for this kind of money I expected a little better, but this will be addressed later when the car is broken down for full respray and gutter delete
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648585417.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648585417.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648585417.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648585417.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648585417.jpg |
chose to run a 964 front bumper smile I know its not correct but looks so much better then the welting that RUF supplies you with, Also a set of NOS early Hella headlights which the RUF runs
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648586052.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648586052.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648586052.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648586052.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648586052.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648586052.jpg |
So after a few phone calls I was able to get my hands on a genuine fuel that, which I stripped and refinished and a boost gauge (yes, stay tuned, boost coming )
|
this is one impressive build. lucky to have seen it in person. no one hard parks a car like you.

|
Had to get after that Blue interior, new headliner, radio, some RUF Pedals and RUF mats

by far one of the hardest RUF parts to obtain and one of the more expensive was the shift knob

So, what’s a Yellowbird without two turbos….
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648595901.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648595901.jpg |
First order of business was to break this motor down to essentially a long block, …
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648601097.jpg |
|
With having no history on the motor I decided to scope the cylinders, do a mini clean up and reseal and send it, fingers crossed!

My first attempt at bolting it in the car,

993TT engine?
|
and One fo duh hoessss !!!
Cripes, took a guy long enough to build this one-off, mind-blowing, example of backyard hackery ;) Only a legend tears down a 993TT motor and tosses the parts in a Grapes Box... |

My brother traveled all over Europe back in the late eighties(?). He sent me pictures of the outside of the P factory after hours and one of these Ruf was the only car parked out front.
Is that a factory engine carrier for a TT? Beautiful subtle build. |

Off to my homies shop to fab up a exhaust and intake set up. The plan was to duplicate the stock intake system without all the smog and sensors. Also, my main thing with the exhaust was the maintain the oval exhaust tips that the RUF cars have
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648672920.png http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648672920.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648672920.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648672920.jpg |
|
I spy a b5s4 smiling lower grille in the homie's shop. Also an excellent 6cyl. tt car if I dare say. In particular: avants rule the fast Audi kingdom
oh, back on subject that exhaust is pretty nice too :D |
So, I knew for myself the oil system was going to be a big hurdle. I started by sourcing a entire NOS 72 set up
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648675964.jpg Well, pucker up buttercup! Lucky to have a local guy with a 72 so I was able to take a template of the set up http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676102.jpg |
My plan was to fab up a plate I could bolt into the stock oil tank hole that would mount the 72 thermostat
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676581.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676581.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676581.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676581.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676581.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676581.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676581.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676581.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648676581.jpg |
Then I had to make some jumpers from the stock carrera cooler to the front mount cooler, at the time I thought I needed two coolers, but fast forward a few months, it’s total overkill. Car is actually running to cold currently
One of the other RUF mods was the lack of jack holes in rocker panels, so stripped mine down, welded shut, new wurth and paint and bam! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648677446.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648677446.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648677446.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648677446.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648677446.jpg |

Next order of business was to sort the deck lid and wing situation.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648691412.jpg |
Next the wing. I’ve seen a lot of people bolt a carrera rubber lip on a 930 wing, while it can be done, nothing lines up properly and in the end just looks horrible. So, I cut up a turbo wing and re fiberglass all the lines and curves to match the Carrera rubber!
In the last pic you can see I separated the wing in two pieces so I could glass and body work the inside so this will never be visible http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648693281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648693281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648693281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648693281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648693281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648693281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648693281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648693281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648693281.jpg |
