While you're in there - a spiral out of control! 79 911sc Build/Progress
Its great motivation that pelican parts is having a sweepstakes at the time of this post, as i’ve been meaning to post a bunch of things I have been working on for the past few months on my downtime with work!
my ig handle for the car is @79_911sc - i havent posted for quite sometime due to a bunch of factors, but hoping to get back to it after my work is done. The Car 1979 911sc Euro - 3.0L/915 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648750095.JPG Ill do my best to update this when I can with new things; and bring everything up to speed. I got the car a few years back after my M3 got totaled outside a restaurant out here in Los Angeles, I had just started my own business at the time and wanted to have something to tinker on and I always wanted one. The car has been fantastic, but like most of us I never had the opportunity to really give the car the attention it deserves due to the work we were doing at the time. I was a fulltime designer, for the last decade or so working in the entertainment industry, and as of the last 2-3 years been full time game developer working on my own indie game release, set (hopefully) for later this year 2022. Due to covid, i have not driven much at all due a cracked windshield and thought I would take the time to really fix up a lot of **** that bothered me; starting with the interior. The Interior http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648750935.jpg this photo was after removing the old radio, and checkin out how the new continental looked but you can really get an idea of the quality of things after sitting for a bit and the dash cover removed - lots of dust now. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648752182.jpg me starting to take some of the trim out etc The interior seemed okish at first glance, but someone at some point had just sprayed the interior with black paint; over the dash, doors, carpet, and headliner - you name it.The carpet was a good starting point, and pretty beat - I actually dont even wanna call it carpet, it was a felt it looks like someone just laid down vs gluing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648751515.jpg I actually tried to cut the carpet into a uniform square here so it didnt look so wacky I popped the windows out in order to polish the glass down the line, and get the dash out (that didnt feel right pushing the windows out, but it was fairly simple - a real uneasy feeling pushing windows out of a car) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648752335.jpg I took apart the dash/lower dash pieces and trim in hope to remove the paint via some sort of thinner or stripper. Removing the paint partially worked, but really destroyed the materials under neath - but cool, it was a dark brown vs black (didnt know if the whole dash matched)… im getting somewhere. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648754065.jpg Dash was pretty cracked and all jacked up from someone painting it - im assuming the velcro here was to keep the cover from rubbing and squeeking http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648752451.jpg that gasket on the center air vent was totally fried and crispy http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648752451.jpg cant believe someone did this |
While I was breaking down the interior I did my first purchase: Appbiz plush carpet, in a salt n pepper color. Talking to Appbiz was cool, very knowledgeable as everyone has mentioned before; would def recommend to anyone looking for carpet. I got mine on ebay actually to be clear vs their website
I began looking into seats, since mine were beginning to crack and some of the features were no longer working. I looked into covers, or reupholstery; but decided to take a chance on car-bone. I had been following car-bone on ig for quite some time now, and pulled the trigger on having them make some bespoke pieces. To start:dash/seats http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648754439.JPG (my quick and dirty mockup for myself and them) I had them make me some bucket seats in chocolate brown leather, brass rivets, and porsche crest. I wanted the interior to be something much closer to the original flair of the car, but with my own taste and hugged me a bit better. For the dash, I did the same color with matching stitching. There was a lot of back and forth between car-bone and myself, i felt like it took 2-3 months of waiting between emails to get it all sorted. It feels like their cadence was: you’d get a response to your email every other day (they’re in Poland) - so let this be a warning to those reaching out, dont expect a super fast response or updates - the seats themselves probably took another 3-4 months? I cant remember the exact time - but I am super happy with the results and cant wait to get this all in. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648754754.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648754754.jpg lighting isnt fantastic here in these shots, but i loved how they turned out Since getting the seats/dash I have sent my door cap trim/lower dash pieces and a few other bits to get wrapped in leather to match along with a steering wheel I am hoping they can make soon too ( i am still waiting for all this ) |
Ok well ****, what am i doing? ok well err uhh.. lets keep tearing this **** apart - with the dash and pieces out, it was real easy to get access to the glove box, gauges and all that so out ya’ go
Gauges The gauges seemed fine, the odometer needed a new gear, and the glass/plastic were pretty scratched and had some paint sprinkles here and there. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648755988.JPG took em apart, and got to cleaning - polished the glass and plastic to a nice pristine shine and got a new gear sorted for the odometer. That gear was so jacked up; it was wild how it was almost jelly like.. very delicate, it was almost hard to count the cogs (i had to make a lil graphic counting the cogs tell) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648756476.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648756476.jpg my quick and dirty way of creating a way to count the cogs - since my brain wasnt having it - just touching the wheel left a residue on your fingers |
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648756680.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648756680.jpg the glass/plastic were pretty beat seen here http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648756680.jpg using a drill, polishing pad, and a few variations of buffing compounds for car paint, i was able to get a pretty good luster and most of the scratches were now gone. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648756680.jpg almost done at this point, but i kept polishing after this photo was taken |
I had done my best to label the wires and connection points on the back of the gauges, as to not disturb anything to the best of my ability - id love to just plug n play when this is all done.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648757102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648757102.jpg label maker came in clutch. The bezels I had painted in black satin wurth trim paint, but I think I will cerakote these, since you gotta pry on em pretty good when accessing the insides (cerakote is fantastic) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648757102.jpg Someone had snipped a few lines to the gauges, quite the bummer since i dont plan on getting a new wiring harness atm (kinda still want to..you know, since im in there) but hoping to not run into too many probs right now as it was working fine before, and didnt notice anything out of the ordinary (at least i think) - the lights will be replaced with vintage white leds and wires from car magic. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648757102.jpg I was pretty stressed about getting into the gauges, but after a lot of youtube and browsing the web; it really felt more manageable - and they turned out decent |
Doors
For the doors, I always had issues with water drippin' inside from the doors - so I wanted to put an end to it and replace all the gaskets and seals. Pulled the old stereo out with the speakers and got a newer continental head unit, and some JBL speakers to drop in when the time comes. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648758269.jpg I once took a turn, and the speaker shot out at my leg - "PUH!" I dont think the car even want these anymore http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648758269.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648758269.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648758269.jpg Managed to get a tape out of the cassette player as well that had been stuck in there forever. That was pretty exciting The doors were pretty straight forward, but the window regulators were shot and stripped and missing several teeth on the crank; cant wait to get the new ones in holy ****. I always hated when people got in and you got that anxiety or had to open the window for someone “in just the right way” http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648758269.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648758269.jpg the passenger side glass was glued to the window lifter rail - clever but that took a few days to get out. I had to keep soaking it in thinners and tryin to get at it with razor blades, wire (threading it around the window tryin to go at like floss) not much worked - but it finally came out after a few days of trial and error and gentle prying. The window frames themselves were dirty, but also are a lil crusty I started to prep them for paint, but changed it up and I plan on sending these to shaun over at tru6 after my fan/shroud - err woops, that comes later. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648758269.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648758269.jpg Carbone will be creating a new set of RS door panels as well to match everything else; however this will be black with chocolate stitching |
Glass
After removing all the windows - I polished all the glass out with 3M Glass polish, and a orbital buffer - this took forever, but the results were great. It doesnt get big pits out - i suppose it could but youd be there for an eternity. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg Gotta keep it wet and just keep at it. I forget but I think I may have done 1 or 2 hours per window pending size, half on each side. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg vent glass before and after http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg quarter glass before/during/after http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648761365.jpg rear glass before/after Its really hard to tell from the photos - but they really shine and sparkle when its done, the glass is suppper smooth aside from deeper pits. With all the glass out of the car and frames out - i plan on getting some ceramic tint, hoping to get a deal; considering its much easier to just have the glass on a table. |
Bolts
After going through the doors and other bits of the car, over time i noticed how mismatched things were - but more important to me: some of these bolts I dont know the quality and id prefer 8.8 when possible at least. i set out to make it my goal, to start cataloging all the bolts that I am working with if they need to be replaced. This kinda resulted in me going wild with measuring most of the bolts I took out. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648834886.jpg I also hit the internet and researched the most common porsche sizes etc and did my best to put together a kit of bolts in yellow zinc. I am a absolute sucker for yellow bolts http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648834886.jpg A big chunk of the bolts I got http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648834650.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648834650.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648834650.jpg I sourced everything thus far for the most part from belmetric - and ill do my best at some point to share my doc that i've put together with all the bolts and links associated. I am unsure how correct they are since in some cases random lengths were being used in some of my projects. These are all 8.8 if not harder The yellow is fairly inconsistent but thats fine, i kinda figured it would be as such |
Hardware drool...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...leys/kwijl.gif
Please post up your list; I face similar issues and it bugs to have non-standard hardware installed. Cheers |
I def will! I got a bit messy with it once belmetric updated their website as of recent and everything broke :(

Wheels/Tires
I had a flat tire, and the tires were at beginning of the end so I needed to get some new rubber so i can drive/move it around when need be. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648843495.jpg 16" tires in our sizes are getting even hard than it was in years previously - it looks like theres just a handful of tires (performance based) that youd want to throw on - and none the less match for aesthetics. Its a bummer that Pirelli removed the Trofeo R sizes as those were fantastic tires and matched up with the cars handling characteristics pretty damn well. After a long look around - i was thankful i could find R-888 / R-888R's in the correct sizes, and since they're the same family they look alike to a degree (thank god!) Im curious on how the R-888r's will be, i dont expect to be able to pin point any real differences since I am running two diff tires - but I recall the R-888's being slightly loud with road noise. I am more than likely going to need to look into 17" wheels in the next 2-3 years so I wont bother with going wild on refinishing these fuchs as of yet. I will just clean the centers up since they're a bit dull - i wish i could get the wheels on something that spins so i could brush the lip back to a nice finish. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648843495.jpg Scuffed these up the best i could - didnt want to go wild http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648843495.jpg there they is - Hanks Tire in woodland hills is always my spot to go for tire needs for sure, great people there. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648843495.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648843495.jpg I meant to do this first, but totally forgot about painting first before going to the new tires, but here we are. Masked them with frog tape - i can see why people just say **** it and paint em all black http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648843495.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648843495.jpg Dupli-Color Automotive Filler Primer http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648843495.jpg Dupli-Color Black High Performance Wheel Paint uhh.. i guess i didnt take a photo once i removed the paper wtf is wrong with me |
Love the direction of your build so far.. except the white faced gauges:p
“I wish i could get the wheels on something that spins so i could brush the lip back to a nice finish.“ Get the rear end up on jack stands. Chalk the fronts. Start the car. Select the appropriate gear for the desired speed and polish away. |

Great write up about your project !
Thanks for sharing ! |
Shifter
I've taken this apart before to replace some of the bushings, but this time I will take'r apart to change the look completely and replace/fix anything else that might be worn. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648922744.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648922744.jpg what looks like dirt is actually.. dirt it seems, but its also a bunch of black overspray and red from the color respray of the car i am guessing. This has always driven me nuts, and never had the opp to do it http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648922892.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648922744.jpg scrubbed with brillo and acetone worked pretty well to get this clean for the most part... i was gonna just leave it raw like this, but i really dont like the metal on the tops tone - i wish it were a different shade to go along with more stuff in the car. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648922744.jpg got the shifter parts blasted, along with some pedalbox stuff that ill write up about soon http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648922744.jpg This will be my first time cerakoting - lots of prep goes into it, so i am hopin for the best! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1648922744.jpg this came out great! I love the yellow and black here A future project will be a sandblasting booth/vapor blasting - ive been using the handheld cheapie and its an awful experience, with the handheld thing you gotta refill it quite frequently - and your back gets rocked pretty hard. Would just recommend taking these out to someone or using a booth with explaining to them what you're doing so they dont touch them with their fingers and whatnot |

Yup, that works! Nice!!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

Pedal Box
I wanted to redo this since it looked like crap, and I was chasing some strange pedal feel here and there so this felt like a good place to start. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649374155.jpg I had replace one or two bushings previously(you can see the brighter bronze) but that was shadowed by the other stuff Like most - it was pretty rusty and full of dirt n crud, and bushings shot I got a new bushing kit from pelican and a new clutch pedal shaft to press in a fresh bronze bushing as well there too - it did have a little bit of warp; but not so bad as I was expecting. Hard to tell, but the amount of padding on the left of the hole is much less than the right. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649374155.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649374155.jpg The worst of the bunch.. and the hands down worst was the roll pin in the clutch pedal - omg dont waste your time on this, and go to a machine shop (unless you have a drill press) - I went thru several bits trying to drill this out, tried tapping it out; the works. With the time i have to do stuff, this took a lil over a month of tinkerin before i gave up and brought it in, and even then the dude went thru 3 bits on the drill press. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649374155.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649374155.jpg my attempts were worthless - just marring the metal if anything I plan on trying a different method to lock this in place - because.. never again. I will try out a snug clevis pin. I sandblasted this down, baked, degreased and got to cerakoting and rebuilding the unit once I got it all back from the machine shop. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649374155.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649374155.jpg it came out great and pretty happy with the results - i am super tempted to have the springs redone in yellow :) but ill relax on that. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649374155.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649374155.jpg getting the hang of cerakote - learning what i can do better each time etc. |
Looks good. I didnt have much issue driving the pin out. Something ive noticed is that roll pins also seem to have a taper. It might be just me or it develops after being in the hole for a long time. Regardless of the cause, if you try to bang the fat end through, it wont work.
|
Following along, love to see a good transformation, the shifter housing looks great, I wish I had done that when I recently rebuilt my shifter assembly.
|
thanks everyone!
from what ive read here: when i was going thru my pedal box - it looks like some people had a easy trip with it! youre very lucky @AlKidd! |

Insulation Scrapin'
This was a TON of work; lots of labor involved with this. This project is totally doable at home, but its going to take a lot of effort on your part if you plan on doing it yourself (pending the shape of everything im sure) The following is a few months of work if you do decide to do this - do yourself a favor and invest in a oscillating multi-tool. This saved me lots of scraping time! what a fantastic tool this was for this job The car itself had what looked like some cheapo foam insulation along with the factory tar/butyl http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649535391.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649535391.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649535391.jpg pretty gross - i did find 50 cents tho http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649535391.jpg This foam was a nigthmare I used citrus strip remover to get a lot of the fuzz and glue off - i found that when using the citrus strip: you really need to go on heavy, light coats just dry up and becomes real hard to remove. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649535391.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649535391.jpg I tried the dry ice method to remove all the previous butyl/tar; this worked pretty good - the ice was expensive, i forget exactly the cost, but i should/woulda got more.. but didnt due to the price. I thought I had enough, but I should have gotten wayyy more to just fill it up real good. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649535391.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649535391.jpg there was a lot of satisfying ASMR cracks n pops during this process; ill have to upload a video http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649535391.jpg The aftermath was pretty messy; lots of glue/tar and whatnot left over. I tried a variety of different products to help remove a lot of this stuff - mineral spirit (wasnt easy to get this since its not allowed in CA anymore) and WD-40 worked pretty well More to this post coming |
thanks @sportsbeetle - Its been real tricky in general finding all the bolts; i am hoping that when i am done with it, it helps a lot of folks out!
|
I found dry ice + a pneumatic hammer with chisel head was the best way to tackle the insulation. Also did it in small focussed sections over a number of days switching between other projects. It's a PITA either way.
|
To make your dry ice go further place it in a bags and then put them over the spots you next want to chip off. that way you can use it for longer and its far easier to manage. ive done a whole car with about a $20 worth of dry ice

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg for the most part everything came off - I was mainly left with lil left over pieces, and lots of glue http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg using WD-40 and mineral spirits to clean and melt down the glues http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg osculating tool is top tier http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg When eveything was cleaned up for the most part - it gave me a good opportunity to asses any rust, and see what needed to be done outside of the obvious... like wtf is this hole all about.. theres one on the other side but its a clean hole... not sure how this one ended up so wild http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg the driver side rear seat was pretty damn rusty and was feeling real thin to the touch with the ole' knock n touch test - lots of rust vacuumed up when i got cleaning as well. I unfortunately discovered a hole through the seat and could see the ground. Was really hoping i was gonna be able to just seal this all up with POR-15 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg the hole is the black spot in the bottom center, kinda damp'ish in tone to the rest of the metal. a few weeks went by due to weather, and I was able to get a new seat pan in for restoration design - quality was fantastic + theres lots of scrap from cutting this down for other things down the line. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg easy does it... The auto-heat cable popped out of its restraint, and i cut it clean in half - which was kind of a ok thing since i plan on removing the auto-heat unit and keeping the backdate style. The autoheat unit i had was so temperamental and it would just kick on randomly. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649555607.jpg was super surprised how well these fit - great job restoration design more parts of this story coming soon |

With the new pan in hand, my buddy came over and helped me get this welded nicely in http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649715668.jpg We also were able to utilize some left over metal from the seat pan to close these holes up http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649715668.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649715668.jpg After cleaning up a bit, i wanted to get this stuff sealed up - i noticed while cleaning up the glue and such from the padding that it looks like porsche was using beige sealer on my car - so i wanted to keep that goin.. despite not seeing it ever. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649715668.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649715668.jpg I used Eastwood Internal Frame Coating on the bottom side of the seat, since I couldnt reach in too well with the sealer - this worked out nicely since it applies with this lil hose attachment. This Coating came in handy for a few other things as well. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649715668.jpg while cleaning up some rust and lookin around, i caught some more rust - this looks pretty brutal but looks isolated; i will have to deal with this after i wrap up the interior project here - very similar on the other side of the car http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649715668.jpg After sealing everything up - it was time to start sanding lil spots I might have missed, but also just cleaning up in prep for POR15. Things are feelin/lookin good aside from that new rust http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649715668.jpg |
Insulation Prep
Now that everything is sealed up, I was able to treat the metal using the POR15 suite of products - degreaser/metal prep/por15 Since por15 requires 2 coats - i grabbed grey and black to make it easy to spot where i missed; starting with grey. I dont know if I would recommend POR15 in the end, id maybe use another product: I think theres just too many steps to make sure the product is applied correctly compared to a lot of newer products out there. I went with POR15 since ive heard a lot of good lore about it in the past. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649785650.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649785650.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649785650.jpg degreaser cleaned it up nicely They want you to pretty much spray their products out with water, but i didnt want to put the hose inside the car at this stage; so i used my pump spray bottle to clean this out - this is where i went wrong im sure, as i couldnt probably clean everything to the best of my ability here. Quite the shame since I put so much effort into prepping for this moment. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649785650.jpg all clean - and time for metal prep Once everything was good to go - i threw on a coat of grey; it was at this point i started seeing where little bits of oil or degreaser may have still remained from the cleanings (probably a lot of that wd40 and such i used to remove the butyl/tar) A pressure washer probably would have been great here http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649786042.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649786042.jpg It said the second coat needs to be applied while tacky - I had to wait overnight to get to just a tacky phase, took longer than I expected! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649786042.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649786042.jpg things came out not bad considering! nice seeing one color vs the mix match of random colors http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649786042.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649786042.jpg I woulda/shoulda have done a mobile sandblasting service to clear out the interior to be a guaranteed clean. Would have been a opp to try out @rennch's blasting service. Would have saved weeks of time cleaning and prepping and yielded a more even surface i am sure. In the end like I mentioned, I would probably not use POR15 again for this type of project due to the prep being so finnicky; there is quite a number of newer products that I would probably give a shot now that I have done this. |
Foil Town USA
With everything all coated up and ready to roll, I want to get my insulation in. I went with membrane since its a dual purpose insulation for sound and heat - and around 6mm (they now make a 8mm btw) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg insulation isnt too cheap, so i wanted to make sure i got proper fitment along with using as much as i could without ordering too much. It looked like 2 boxes would be enough since thats what they suggest. I got to work with foil (made the mistake of not ordering heavy duty - so i had to redo this a few times before giving up and just buying heavy duty) Since the foil contorts you can get a better idea of the actual form in the end vs eyeballin or just cutting as you go. This is actually pretty similar to making video game stuff/3d modeling work. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg if i did this again, i would be much more vigilant about tac'n down foil here and there to make sure it doesnt move, in the end i found a bit of inaccuracy, prob from foil slightly shifting http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg the fronts were actually trickier than i expected due to just having to mangle my body a lil weird to get it right. - got the new door pieces in (really nice door feel now) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg this took a few tries to get right - i wanted to be sure to measure three times, cut once. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg layout all set, looks like i will use exactly 2 boxes, with 1 sheet left over for the roof portion of the project. ( i am holding on to scraps till the end) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg rear section complete. I got some heavy duty fiskar scissors for this, and they cut these up real nice - along with fresh razors for random detail bits. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg floors squared up (i actually ended up remaking the side pieces to these after this photo. they didnt feel clean enough) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg remaking these side pieces http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649960406.jpg floors dropped in just for giggles - and they fit nicely. phew |
Insulation Time
With most if not all pieces cut, i went to work gettin these put down and locked in http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650144189.jpg test fit http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650144189.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650144189.jpg everything was plopping in pretty well, way easier than making the templates there was a few lil gaps here and there from where the foil might have moved or i cut a lil too liberally with the scissors; im wondering now if using blue painters tape would have been better for layering and making templates. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650144189.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650144189.jpg the membrane product was real nice and easy to work with, however their matching tape doesnt stick as well as you'd hope and i would expect i have maybe used 4 rolls vs their advertised "you prob just need 2 per car" http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650144189.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650144189.jpg still more taping to do but its pretty cozy in here now. My question to top this off, is if i apply some of the membrane to the roof behind the sunroof, will the 6mm of insulation here show through the headliner? ie. will we see a square outline thru the fabric? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650144189.jpg red is where i was originally planning to place more membrane, or do i do it in the blue square area? |
looking back on it, prob would have saved a ton of cash using wendy's chicken sandwich wrappers

I am looking into headliners atm - I am trying to find something close to what the car originally had - it looks like the OG headliner in my car had a larger "grain" that was more uniform across the board - where as I am seeing a lot of "dot" textures. I just got my samples from GAHH; they're feeling great in my hand, they seem real durable.. but the texture seems off.
OG Headliner http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1651626934.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1651626738.jpg GAHH samples Anyone already go down this path and find something that looks/feels good? I am tempted to make a new post about this in particular since it looks like it could be useful for those looking for stuff that matches. |
