While I'm in there ...
In the next couple of weeks I plan to drop the engine to take care of several oil leaks, I plan to replace:
- as many rings as possible without taking the engine (completely) apart (including flywheel, #8, etc.) - replace oil return tubes - new gas filter and accumulator - general cleaning of the engine and engine bay - re-attach the soundproff material in the engine bay - clean the fan - try to replace the original intake runners with 2.7's - replace the airbox with a stainless steel one (just for the looks) - if budget allows install the Carrera chain tensioners. So.. while I'm in there.... and having the engine down, what else should I be doing? valves where adjusted not so long ago (~1,500 miles) a have new SSI's and Borla muffler. Thanks in advance

something Tyson pointed out on my recently dropped and reinstalled engine...
check the manifold boots on the runners...easy fix when the engine is out FI O-rings Check all vacuum hoses for tight connections and brittleness...some just snaped of in my hands if you ambitious take off the shroud and give the engine a good scrub down...I found a layer of gunk...sure it didn't help cooling zip tie wires and hoses neatly check wiring harness alot of scrubbing and cleaning... sounds like fun... mine will have to come out for those intake boots...curses... Ohh, I feel for you! IMHO you should trim back your thought process on this one. It is never ending. I took my engine out last year for a clutch job and thought "while I'm in here" well sweet mother Mary! It can be never ending with that attitude. Several several g's later I am nearing the end but I would do it different next time. Whew, got that off my chest.

Mark: yes, it will be fun.. Dallas-Pelican meeting/engine drop/BBQ
MJ: Thanks for the idea regarding the hoses and manifold boots Lendady: I hear you.. so far my solution has been to put more oil and look the other way when I blow I big puff of smoke or the car 'marks the territory' after being parked for a while. I have drawn the line on NOT TO separate the heads from the block. Not because I don't need an engine 'refresh' is just because I don't have the skills nor the budget to do it now... Two more items to add to the list: - new engine/transmission mounts - ground cable Keep the ideas and warnings coming!! Thanks and Regards

I doubt the 2.7 runners will work with 73.5 CIS heads; the injectors are different on the 2.7 runners and require a relief groove in the head which the 2.4 CIS heads do not have.
Replace engine mounted thermostat o-ring. Remove fiberglass shroud and clean top of engine. Remove engine mounted oil cooler; especially clean the air side and install with new seals. Replace breather cover gasket; replace breather hose to oil tank if hard or leaking. Modify sheet metal baffles between cylinders per instructions in Bruce Anderson's performance book; this is an easy modification and is claimed to be worth 9 degrees or so in reduced temperatures. IMO the oil fed tensioners are a far more important upgrade than the stainless steel airbox; replace the chain ramps too while you're in there. Cheers, Jim |

For those with a sense of humor...go over to the 914/6 lists and search on DW Disease.....
Dirk Wright Disease is the Legendary King of while I'm in there overboard spending.... ![]() The 914ers simply refer to it as DWD....

Jim: Thanks, did not know about the 2.7 intake runners (which I have) not being 'compatible' with my 2.4. So I will leave that alone and just change the injectors O rings in the existing runners.
I agree that the chain tensioners are more important, I'm trying to rework the budget to fit them in there... Anybody interested in a stainless steel airbox? Thanks for all the other gasket and hoses pointers. Keep them coming!!!

Jordi, The 73.5 CIS injectors and seals are not in the runners; they are mounted in small, thin walled metal housings which are pressed into the heads. The 73.5 CIS injectors and rubber seals (it's not an o-ring) are different than those found in the 2.7's. Are your runners steel or aluminum? The OEM 73.5 CIS runners were black painted steel. You will likely find "crud" deposited inside the steel runners; the amount increasing towards the heads. It is worth cleaning this out to restore original airflow. Cheers, Jim

The thought about the chain tensioners...best mod you can do...
skip the SS air box and go for the oil fed tensioners... Got a pic of the box? Might take it off your hands...

Jim, you are correct (as usual) I misspoke when I said O rings for the injectors and I have the ugly black runner tubes, the good news is that I have the injector seals, the rubber sleeves for the intake pipe and the gaskets. Don't know if the runners are steel or aluminum, I will check later today.
Thanks for the tip on cleaning the runners, will do. McDaniel, I know, I know.. chain tensioners are important.. check your PM. Keep them coming!!

Jim the intake runners are steel, what will be the best way to clean them up? I'm very fond of using diesel and let them soak overnight...
Also I'm thinking on setting up a webcam (no audio, we want to keep the 'program' PG-13) just in case anybody cares to see a bunch of adults acting like kids for a while. More ideas, suggestions, gotchas always welcome. Thanks

Soak in B-12 Chemtool but it will also take the paint off so you'll have to repaint them. We repainted our steel runners a nice gloss black and they look great against the fiberglass shroud which we cleaned up and painted yellow; for some reason our 73.5 car had a yellow (MFI) shroud which someone had very crudely painted black. The correct (OEM) color for a 73.5 CIS shroud is black. Wear safety googles, gloves and have lots of ventilation with the Chemtool. I've never used diesel fuel for this purpose but it might work; mineral spirits and mechanical action (plastic or wood scapers and small toothbrush like wire brushes) would be my second alternative after the Chemtool. The deposits on the insides of the 73.5 CIS runners we cleaned up looked like a combination of oil, fuel varnish and dirt. Jim

I would take the shroud off and do some major cleaning. You will have the motor out and on a stand at any rate. Also, how are your rear shocks? CV Boots? Heater hoses? While you are in there can go overboard. I would suggest finding out exactly what you need once the motor is out. There will be some items you do not notice until the motor is out. Keep a good attitude and remember, this is supposed to be fun!

Jim: thanks for the cleaning advice. Do you have a link to a picture of your engine.. I cannot find it, yellow and black looks like a good combination (I'm half color blind so color mixing is not one of my 'virtues').. I may go the powdercoat route for shroud and other parts.
David: per sure my suspension can use some R&R.. still the original.. but that will be another chapter of "while I'm in there" as a matter of fact I have already a set of aluminun rear trailing arms waiting for the next 'budget appoval', I will check CV boots, heater hoses are new (part of my SSI/muffler upgrade late last year). Thanks to all... Keep them comming!!

There is not a picture of our 73.5 CIS engine posted; I'll see if I can get one uploaded somehow this weekend. The shroud is fiberglass so I do not think it can withstand powdercoating temperatures. Jim

Ron, that's a really nice color!!!!
No, I'm not half color blind, just I don't have any taste while combining colors, to me blue and green match perfectly! Please post more picture or send to jordi.riera@attbi.com if they are too big or too many. I feel a cool looking engine bay coming along!! Thanks
