alternator bearings 1986 3.2

I know there are several threads on this, but I could not find a clear direction about what replacement bearings to look for...
Same for the brushes. Anyone?

Well you could go to a alternator/starter shop and have them rebuild or order you bearings. I tried one local to me and they were no name, probably chinesium bearings so I ordered my own. If it’s a Valeo like on my 87 then here are my notes, I went with SKF bearings. I ended up using the RSJEM bearing as they were electrical rated with a 32krpm limit, way more than needed. The standard RSH should be fine.

6201DU= BEARING 12 - 32 - 10
- [ ] 6201-2RSJEM(C3) BRG
- [ ] SKF 6201-RSH

NSK B17-102DG36 / 6303-2RS=BEARING 17-47-14

- [ ] 6303 2RSJEM (C3) BRG
- [ ] SKF 6303-2RS
- [ ] SKF 6303-2RSL

TOLERANCE RING for Valeo A14N67+

Easiest thing to do is pull and press out bearings to get the markings, and if they were just labeled Poland like one of mine just measure with a caliper and match. All this is easy to do yourself.

By the way, where did you get the tolerance ring?

I had to order it through the alternator/starter shop as the off name model they had didn’t fit. I could have ordered it online as well.

This is a timely thread for me. My alternator was rebuilt 25 years ago not too long after I bought my 911. I had it rebuilt by a one may stand guy that did great.

Right now it charges fine until the alternator get a through heat soak. Then it drops to charging at 12.5 volts. Once it cools off, back to 13.5 volt charging. The battery is just a few months old.

So this winter, I will pull the alternator, and take it to a different rebuilder as the other guy that did it for me last time retired and closed up shop.

I want the good bearings, and likely need the rubber boot. My alternator has over 100,000 miles on it since the rebuild. I drive my car on road trips, and I keep it in top running condition. The good news is it is working fine now but it is obviously near end of life and in need of a rebuild.

And rebuilding is a far better option than a "remanufactured" or new unit.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for.

Glen, 25 years of alternator life does really speak of a quality of a part and the rebuild service.

I have just rebuilt my alternator, replacing the bearings in it. Bearings were shot, but he tricky thing was that that even the new bearing, when pressed in, allowed the shaft to have a very slight play. Bearing slot had some wear, so I got it machined, to enlarge the slot, put in a steel bushing and then the bearing pressed into it. No more play and loosenes, and I hope no more scraping the fan housing, which I got refinished, as I had it out anyways.

Glen, if your alternator uses an external VR, check that too. Offhand, I can't think of something inside the alternator that would cause it to lose voltage as it warms up. Possibly a failing diode? Check for AC in your output. Does the alternator light come on?
