That colour looks too 'saturated' to me for it to be Gulf Blue, but between the photo, my monitor, and my eyes, it could well be. It could also conceivably be Pastel Blue or Enamel Blue, or some other colour besides.

There is another Gulf Blue listed on Paintscratch - 6603 - which appears different to 328 on the on-line preview. Another one you could check out is 6403 - enamel blue. Pastel blue (R 5012) isn't listed on there, but it could be a possibility.

Another solid blue

How about Mexico Blue. I don't know the code right off but it's an easy one to find.

Farleyd I tried to PM you but it may not have worked. Thats my 1966 912 with paint number 6603 and code 315. Heres some info on early porsche paint codes. The site can be found here; http://www.912registry.org/restore/pcode.htm

Paint Codes
Porsche® 912 & 912E Original Paint Code Numbers

Exterior Paint Table

Use the following list to help check the original exterior color of your car. You may be in for a surprise! Look on the plate on the left-hand door hinge pillar, below the chassis number.

Note: For '65-'69 cars, additional codes may be attached to the paint colors listed in the table below. Original paint manufacturers are designated by letters:

L=Lesonal
G=Glasurit
H=Herberts (Now DuPont Herberts)
R=all paint manufactures

A prefix number 97- signifies that the original paint was 140 degree C / 284 degree F 'baking paint', oven cured with all heat sensitive parts removed. Suggestion: Don't try that at home.

Factoid: Colors of Porsches delivered in 1966, by percentage of overall production [as indicated in the October 1967 Christophorus]
Light Ivory (23.9%), Polo Red (18.7), Irish Green (14.2), Aga [dark] Blue (8.7), Gulf [light] Blue (4.6), Sand Beige (9.5), Slate Grey (6.9), Bahama Yellow (6.5), Metallic Silver (3.1), Black (3.0), other colors (0.9)

For 1976 912Es, the paint number should be on the top of the plate, in a three digit(color code) - one digit(coachbuilder) - one digit(paint manufacturer) format.

Some of the paint colors listed below are hyperlinked to a color chip scanned from an original color chart. This is intended for a general rendering only, do not use this to select your paint! You may be able to find the original paint in your car by looking in the trunk, engine compartment, under the upholstery, or other location. Look for original color charts for all years at literature and swap meets.

I am the thread starter, could it be that there is 2 Gulf Blue? The sample i received was on the light side. Not even close to the pic of the previous Pelicanhead. Thats the one i want. Is there 328 Gulf Blue AND a 315 Gulf Blue????

Thanks!

eion 05-23-2003 07:05 AM

Yes, there are 2 Gulf Blues - if you look at the table of colours above, you'll note that colour 6603 (colour option 03 for '66) is Gulf Blue, and the code for it is 315.

Code 328 comes up on Paintscratch as a '72/'73 colour, but I don't know how it compares to the 'other' Gulf Blue. Presumably it wouldn't have a different code unless it was a different colour...?

Soterik 05-23-2003 12:18 PM

I understand there IS two Gulf Blue's, mine is 6603 on my 67S, and the car is 2/3'rds original paint.

Two different Gulf Blues were used on early 911s:
1. 66/67/68 Gulf Blue 6603 (the deeper color of Eric's aka SOTERIK car)
2. 72/73 Gulf Blue 328 (the paler color of the "LeMans" movie 917s)
