Dansk / K&N comments
Well, I finally made time to get my Dansk premuffler installed this morning. I already installed the Dansk Sport single 84mm tip muffler a few months ago. I had been really happy with just the muffler, but the combination is exactly what I was hoping for - really sweet sound, no resonance or popping, nice growl at idle and lower speeds, and not too loud at higher speeds. And the performance improvement with both pieces installed is definitely noticeable! I had felt some gain with the muffler alone; the catalogs claim 12 hp or so but I don't think so. But the combination really seems to work well together - I'm guessing maybe 15 hp? Now I can't wait to get my Steve Wong chip installed!
As an aside, I'd like to make a few comments about K&N air filters. I know they get royally burned here, but I've used them on many vehicles over the years and really like them. One of the comments is that they let more dirt through than the stock filters, but I haven't found that to be true. I've had one in this car (an '88 Carrera) for about 6K miles. This morning I took it out to see what was going on inside the air box. We use some disposable white cotton gloves in my shop (for handling polished metal letters) so I put one on and completely wiped the inside of the box - NOTHING came up on the glove - literally clean as new, no oil film, no dust. I think that people who are finding dirt inside the box might not be getting the filter sealed right. And as far as performance gains are concerned, I'm pretty sure I haven't lost any power. In fact I ran the car over one of my favrite routes right after I installed it and it sure felt faster. I intend to do a dyno run after I get the chip installed, and I'll do a stock-vs-K&N comparison at that point. That's it. LOVE the Dansk system! |

I've got a K&N also, another fan of them myself. I had mine out today doing some work, and same thing, clean as a whistle.
I don't know why they get knocked here, they are the filter of choice for many offroad vehicles, as well as airplanes running Rotax motors. I've got one on my airplane, and always have had in the past. Never issues with dirt, and I fly out of a grass airstrip with plenty of dust in the summer.

I like K&N as well...no problems noted after a few years of use in several vehicles.

I think chassis dyno readings have a +/- repeatability factor from run-to-run. In other words, even without changing anything, variations in air, engine and coolant temperatures, air density, traction loss, etc., the exact HP/torque numbers may not be repeatable 10 minutes between tests. How much of a difference might there be between filter A and B that would be beyond the error/repeatability factor? I suspect not much.
I think a more valid method would be to fabricate an intake system that holds the test filters (engine dyno preferred), then provide a method of switching the air source through each filter during a single dyno run. I'll leave it to more established SAE test procedures to determine filtering and air flow capacity between brand new, slightly loaded and fully loaded (used) filters. Mine came with a K&N... I oiled it up and used it but quickly changed it for stock after reading some of the flaming threads here in the archives.
Its probably just as good as stock, but I figured that stock is as good as stock too. Now the K&N and oil kit is sitting in a bag under my sink...Ill keep it for a spare. |

The seat of my pants tells me I got a few more HP out of the Borla exhaust and a K&N setup; don't want to mess with the CS chip though.
Regardless, since I don't have a radio, the only music I hear is the engine and I think the K&N "whistle" is kind of neat! |

Lot of folks are too lazy to keep a K&N clean & oiled...then say it doesn't work....

Hey Wavey, I have almost the same setup with Fabspeed Euro premuffler and a Dansk sport 1 in 1 out with 70 mm tip, and a weltmeister chip. I think it was a huge difference ovr the stock exhaust but my chip was installed by PO and could have been running rich with the stock pipe and clogged the cat. Let us know how the SW chip acts, I've heard some great things about his chips.

Wavey, can you post a pic of your system? I like the not too loud comment and lack of the resonance and popping sounds. I might be interested in the same thing. I had a chip from SteveW installed before the Dansk, then the Dansk install. I felt the difference, so the chip went back to him to update for the premuff. When I get home, the updated chip should be there. I am so looking forward to comparing the before and after.

Wavey, Nice set up you have. I have a Dansk premuffler and a Dansk 1 in 2 out 84mm sport muffler. I have a Weltmeister open air box and KN. When I put on the Muffler it was perfect. Not too loud, great rumble down low and nice roar at red line. When I put in the premuffler it got 50% louder. Took a week to get used to it now I love it! You will enjoy Steve's chip ,I know I sure have. It tied in the exhaust mods very nicely and pulls strong to red line. I had a Weltmeister chip and that really wasn't very good. Very rich at idle and lean at top end. Steve's chip pulls hard to red line were the other lost power just before 6K. With regards to the KN. I cleaned it a while back with around 5k on it. I too saw no dirt or dust in the air box and I drive my car daily in dusty industrial areas for work.

Is the 70 vs the 84 mm outlet size an asthetic thing or a performance thing or a little of both?

Keep in mind that running no filter in a stock 3.2 airbox isn't going to result in a HP increase. If I had to guess, I would say that Wavey will find a 3hp loss running without any filter at all.

Looks like mine! The sound does take getting used to when you are used to stock.
Sounds great when blip the throttle! Hell that alone will scare a ricer! HAHA My problem is that now it chirps the wheels going to second under hard acceleration. Never used to do that before the exhaust mod's.

In one of those "Discovery" tv shows a few years ago, they showed an electronic black box device that modified the engine sound inside the car. One could conceivably select Singer (as in sewing machine), Fiat, Volvo or Briggs and Stratton. On mine, I would have stock, sport muffler, Porsche turbo flat-12 and Ferrari F1 of any era. This would be a very popular accessory.
