1971 911 engine number question.

Hi!

I bought a 1971 911 T targa with a 1970 E motor in it. Now I'm thinking of putting the E engine in a 914 i bought and try to find a engine for the targa with at least the right engine code.

Im new to this and wonder who can help me with figuring out what's the correct engine number for my car and what engine code it should have. I don't have any hope finding the right engine but it would be nice to come close.

Chassie number is 9111111094.

Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter, this will provide the beginning of an idea.

https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-911-engine-numbers-1965-1989/

For more exact information, any "decent" 911 book (red book, author peter morgan, author brett johnson, porsche TSB, workshop manual, etc), will provide a better match, by first decoding your exact vin (i.e then choosing the engine type number to match).

Without checking a book, at first possible glance I would says yours is a 1971 (model year) 911 US targa....sporto maybe (a lot of 1's lol).

Im sure someone will come along and decode your VIN properly for you shortly. Once you know the "location" of the chassis and if targa and/or manual or sporto....then it is easy to determine the engine type number which would match that location (i.e a US, and ROW (rest of world) generally have engine type numbers.

Once you have you determined your engine type number....then you can purchase one of those, ideally with a serial to match the "range" for the chassis/type/location.

p.s. welcome to the forum!

My car's vin is about 80 ahead of yours - engine number is 6115530, type 911/07. So my guess is that you should look for case number somewhere around 6115610

Hi Peter,
I have 6115538 911/07 complete engine and matching gearbox that I pulled out of the matching numbers car (9111121235) to build a 73 RSR hotrod that now has a 3.0 liter high butterfly MFI RSR engine... The engine is in NL with the company restoring the car if you are interested in that - PM me.
Cheers
David

Nope, just a regular non-counterbalanced 2.2 T crank.
