Strange findings..do you have these?
While working underneath my 930, I decided to do a little detailing. Looking up at the heater control valve I noticed something that looked rather strange (see pic for heater valve example). Above the control valves is what appears to be a large piece of foam? Both sides have this foam and it looks like it’s glued in place. Is this something the factory put in? What is its purpose?
Thanks ![]() ![]() |

The factory put that in as a sort of dust filter. Iff you ever notice black goo dripping, this is often the source.

They are asphalt (bitumen) impregnated foam blocks installed by the factory to seal this opening; it leads to the top of the engine compartment. This opening is sometimes used for routing fuel and A/C lines (hole is made in the foam) out of the upper engine compartment to the underside of the car. Cheers, Jim

Oh, it was factory installed, I thought the PO had put it there so I removed it.

I did notice black goo dripping from them as well, that's what prompted my question.
