PET cd parts confusion - valve covers/studs

Hello, I'm in the process of adjusting the valve clearances for the first time. Unfortunately a couple of studs came out on the lower cover by the premuffler - the nuts had rusted on. I managed to free one by double-nutting, the other however was so tightly stuck that I bent the stud trying to free it.

Looking at my PET cd for the part number I noticed that it says it's a BM8x35 stud whereas the ones that came out are clearly 50mm long. Is there a special way of measuring studs?

I need some more studs for the chain covers to replace the long ones left when I removed the smog pump and that has been equally confusing.

Are there known errors with this cd or am I just stupid? If anyone knows exactly what I'm looking for I'd appreciate the help.

I have a 1981SC with turbo valve covers adn carrera chain tensioners. Here's a pic showing the studs in question...

I noticed that. I think they just call out the exposed length of the stud. You aren't crazy.

Aha! You're right - it all makes sense now, thanks. The good news is that part 5a which held the pump on is the same as the bent stud form the valve cover. Now I just need to find two BM8x42 studs for the chain cover.

What I did, and many others have done ... to expedite the repair ... is to get a DIN 8.8 bolt threaded full length, cut off the head to the proper length, dress the burrs with a file, and install your new stud with red Loctite ... after cleaning and degreasing the stud and hole.

I may do that. How do I clean and degrease the hole? - I don't really want to remove the chain covers. Some sort of cotton buds? What solution? Thanks.

Spray some Brake Kleen in the hole and let it dry or blow it out with compressed air.

Isn't there a danger of it spraying over the chain tensioners or doesn't it matter too much?

You could just flood the hole with a solvent like Brakleen using the provided red plastic tube. After several shots, then allowing a few minutes to dry ... the hole should be clean.
