Is this Overkill?
My car gets hot during high RPM low speed driving.(Auto-X) I installed some fans to the oil cooler. Does anyone think these will pose a clearance problem? I have the car up on 4 jackstands so I couldn't check. But I will verify clearance issues before I spend time wiring everything.

the cooler would have to be farther forward than the factory position for the tire not to rub. even the factory louvered panel behind the cooler comes mighty close. no room on the front side? hopefully those fans suck instead of push. they will also get killed by rocks and mud slung off the tire.

They should be very effective at low speed cooling. Any room to put them in front of the cooler? In this position, they look vulnerable to gravel hits. Do you know if all three fans are necessary? One or two might do the job - three might be superfluous. How about three more on the other side too?

Shawn,
You have been looking at too many computer over-clocking sites.

Are the fans waterproof?

Might be able to squeeze one in front of the cooler. Limited space because of the battery box. The fans are pulling air thru the cooler. I may mount one pushing at the front on the bottom and one pulling at the top on the back side.

You might want to consider putting those fans in front of the cooler. I've seen fans melt from pulling the heated air from the cooler. Installing the fans in front of the cooler with the factory stone gaurd in place to protect the cooler and to stall the air long enough to transfer some heat from the cooler to the air would be more effective.

clearly this calls for carbon fiber and titanium. Shall I call a friend at JPL? I think they have a few of these special spec fans next to the $15K toilet seats...
ON a related note, it was fun to watch last week's F1 race during the multiple restarts, with the crews running out to evidently dump dry ice into the system to keep the engines from melting down. egad! |

IMO it looks as if the presence of the 3 fans may reek havoc with the airflow thru the cooler at higher speeds.

Everything said here is right. Biggest issue will be stone damage. Those plastic fan blades are brittle. One hit and the fan will disintegrate. Need to protect them with a stone guard similar to the stock Carrera setup.

Yes to the one fan. but do get a good fan. Buy a spal pull fan. I've had one hooked up to the IC on my saab for over a year and it works great. Super tough.

Heck no! I have a fan like that one as well sucking air from below my engine compartment and pushing it through a tube, and into one side of my air filter on my saab. But it's not in an area that will be hit with rocks and such. Not as strong as a spal either.

will you be wiring the fans through the fuse panel or just off the battery with an inline fuse and switch?

I was thinking off the battery with an inline fuse and a small toggle switch. The car runs cool at speed. So I would just switch it on at auto-X's and what not.

On mine, I went down to Kragen and bought a fog light relay kit (15amp fuse). Wired in a switch in the dash that is on or off.

I have exactly the same thing sitting on my shelf in the garage. Hope to have everything wrapped up by the end of the long weekend.
