Is there a problem with later engines doing the engine swap? I am looking at a 3.6 from a '96 993.

There's no problem with using a '96 or later engine (quite the opposite, in fact), as long as it's a European one that doesn't have the OBD-II stuff.

I guess the "inexpensive" part refers to the fact that post '95 engines are more expensive than 92-95.

Any of them can be t/p'd here's the heirarchy(IMHO) sorted by bang/bucks/issues

97-98 euro OBD1 most bang/fewest issues/ most bucks
96 OBD1 euro not sure but US models used a no longer supported OBD2 DME which must be swapped out for a 97 -98 version i just do not know what version of the DME was used in Europe
95 993 they are all the same( MAF & engine mounted filter are +'s
92-94 964 they are all the same (plastic manifolds and resolved head gasket issue are +'s)
97-98 US OBD2 I wouldn't touch one of these w/ a 10' pole there are people that have none them though
89-92 964 manifold/head gasket issues
