Oil cooler removal procedure

Is it possible to remove the oil cooler with the engine in the car? Any recommendations?

Thanks

Yes you can do it. There is a bit of work, but it can be done. Remove RHR wheel for easier access to cooler bolts.
You also need to remove RH engine tin and the upper plastic cover in the engine compartment, plus whatever might get in the way.

Miguel,

The answer is yes. But you have to remove some parts like engine tin and the oil cooler Fiberglas cover to access the two (2) upper mounting nuts. A partial engine drop could give you more room to work.

i have this job to do too, but mine is a 78SC. i cant even get the fiberglass cover off as there is aluminum piping across the top of it which prevents me from getting at anything.. looks like the fibergalss cover has to lift up but piping is stopping it from going anywhere.

So do i have any options Tony or does the engine have to come out or entire CIS have to come off to do this job ?

I think on some models, like your SC, the shroud is in the way and the engine must come out before you can get the oil cooler out.

If you have an SC, you need to remove or loosen the aluminum/rubber vacuum lines for the AAR, AAV, & CSV mount connections to get off the Fiberglas oil cooler cover. There are 4 fasteners (5-mm bolts) for the rear engine tin and another 4 fasteners for the Fiberglas cover. Finally, access to the 2 hidden oil cooler fasteners located on top for removal. There are 2 more nuts at the bottom of the cooler.

Over in our "How-to" article section we have a pretty good DIY on Oil Cooler Replacement:
https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_oil_cooler_repl/911_oil_cooler_repl.htm

The article states its about a 2-3 hour job altogether and gives a pretty good breakdown of removing the shrouds to complete the job
