Gear ratios of a G50/50 with a 993 varioram quetsion
Hey all,
I'm about to get started on a new build. It will likely be either an IROC or 3.0 RS tribute. I'll be running a 3.6 varioram (likely stock) paired to a G50/50 gearbox. I'm not sure of tires yet but will most likely be running either 15" or 16" wheels with a possibility of 17s but not likely. Any gurus have any insight onto how the stock ratios on a G50/50 will pair with the Varioram? Thanks in advance. Jay

Here is a comparison of most g50 5spds
![]() For what you describe I'd probably go w/ a stock g0/03, though I really like the taller 1st in the /10 and /50 You can of course spends a ton on custom gear sets for a little bit better setup but all in all a g50 6 spd. would be a better place to spend money for the 6 speeds a /32, /31 or /30 are best w/ a /21 a bit lower in desirability, but more reasonably priced I'd wan to avoid a /20 for most purposes

Thank You Bill. I picked up a stalled project that I’m going to likely build into an IROC or 3.0 RS tribute. It has a torsion tube and trailing arms from an 89 930 already transplanted along with all the hydraulics and pedals. It came with the Varioram engine and G50/50. I think the G50 torsion tube means I should just plan on the G50/50. I like a good gear set but I guess I should just build it as is.

You don’t need a g50/50 for under 500hp and it forces the engine farther back in the car then any of the small R&P g50 boxes. They are also worth BIG money so you could come out ahead money wise with a g50/01 or similar. Not sure if the trans mount is different or not on a 89 930 torque tube vs a ‘87-‘89 911 but even if you have to make/modify one, that’s relatively trivial.

I’m trying to get my head around this project. I know the 50/50 is overkill. I have considered selling the 50/50 box like you suggest. I am going down the rabbit hole trying to understand my options. If it’s a somewhat easy install as is, I will probably just proceed. Besides this gives me the option for putting a monster motor in later if I like. -just not sure yet. More reading and research to be done. I’m in unfamiliar territory at the moment. …although I did just go through the process to retrofit a 915 into my 68 SWB but so far I think this conversion likely will be a bit more complicated even though much of the work has already been done. …hopefully done correctly.

I have a pretty healthy 993 in mine and a stock 915/67 is mostly ok w/ 255/40 x17 tires, top is ~166 my 993 has an RSR trans top is ~171 I like the 993 more for freeway but otherwise, for street use, either is around where you want to be the original trans for the 993 had a top ~188, and was awful for general use

Jay, I think you need to sell the 3.6Vram and build a 3.6 turbo motor to match that transmission.
