I bought this thing off a Pelicaner and have since forgotten everything about it. It has been paying no rent in my living room for years. I'm pretty sure it's a Quaife, but I'd love to know what year cars it would work in...I suppose I can count the teeth for ratio(?). The serial numbers turned up little info...

I have an uninstalled Quaife paying no rent in my shop. I could check for numbers on it tomorrow or the next day. AFAIK only Quaife makes them.

There apparently are some early Porsche racks that have a quicker ratio. Don't know much about it, but it's come up on the forum a few times. A search might yield some info.

What's the difference between an "early" and a "late" and what year is that cutoff...?

went through this with my late model race car when i destroyed the rack, a mid 80's rack at that.
i found one from SWEET with a little quicker ratio. be careful changing the ratio as it will change the effort needed to turn. i believe its how many turns per inch of rack travel. look for a name on the body. call sweet, very helpful.

Steering rack ratio change was made with the SWB/LWB chage in the 1969 model year. I believe the Haynes 911 Manual documents it.

Are all racks compatible with all housings? I'm trying to figure out if this has value for my 1970 911T and if not, what cars it'll work with (so I can sell it).

I'm not sure what to do, here. Sounds like my 1970 lock-to-lock is 2.7 turns, and this one is 2.5 turns...I guess I can offer it up for sale with what I know.

I have this quick ratio rack installed in my rally car. Just did it this winter. Zero issues / complaints with it. You do need to bore your housing to accept the larger od on the small gear. About 1,5mm total if I can recall.

I counted the turns lock to lock on the stock rack and it's 3.3 or 3.4.

Mine is 2.5 lock to lock. I’m on 195/70r15 gravel tires and it feels great. Can’t see why I’d want something else. Also, have a Carrera 3.2, so I’ll drive them back to back.

Shouldn't we be measuring how many mm the rack moves per single pinion revolution not lock to lock? This may disprove all the quick ratio talk

I just drove the cars back to back. The G50 carrera has Yokohama 205’s in the front with stock rack. Also has 23/31 bars and adjustable shocks. The rally car has the Quaife rack 19/27 bars and triple adjustable ExTec dampers. Ohh, NO sway bars on the rally car. Despite this, the rally car feel so much quicker in a good way. 3.4 feels like a slug next to in so many ways now. I live where there are some very twisty canyons and you’re moving your hands all over the wheel on the stock rack. Also, I think the lock to lock is a valid point as the gear is cut to the same stop, so the amount of turns from lock to lock is representative of ratio.

I have one in a 914 autocross car on 205/50/15 Hoosiers on 7in ET13 wheels and a lot of caster.
Not moving your hands is definitely worth it for autocross but the extra weight it added to the steering is noticeable and borderline unacceptable. Castor would have to be reduced if it were a track car. |

Can’t see it here, but part number is the same. Also states 2.5 turns lock to lock. Last edited by 3literpwr; 05-24-2022 at 05:46 PM.. |
