Whale tail options for a 1987 911 3.2?
Hey all,
I'm currently exploring my options to install a whale tail on my 1987 911 3.2. The look I'm going for is this: ![]() What are my options? Will an SC tail fit? What about a 930 tail? Last edited by auchenberg; 06-26-2021 at 11:31 AM.. |

I'm not a fan of whale tail/sushi tray tails on narrow bodied cars. That's just my preference. I think a duck tail looks a lot better.

The period correct tail for an 87 non-turbo would be the 84-89 Carrera "Whale" Tail. The 87 isn't really that narrow and I think that tail looks fine. A turbo "Tea Table" tray will fit, but it has a wider opening to account for the turbo intercooler, so likely you'll need to relocate or remove your Carrera emblem on the deck lid. The Carrera tail has a narrower opening so you don't have to relocate the emblem. I alway associate duck tails with earlier cars, so don't really see them being "right" on an 87, but of course it's your car and you can do as you'd like.

Please don't put a turbo tail on a narrow bodied car.. ugh.. Go with the period/ body correct whale tail or duck!

This is a stock 3.2 Carrera CS tail
![]() JMO besides looking heavy a 930 tail is very heavy and will adversely affect handling, not so much the stoker above even better is an aftermarket f/g or c/f clone of the stocker, very light and an asset to handling here's mine in c/f ![]()

OP...in your first post, you show a Turbo Tea Table. In your last post, you show a Carrera Whale Tail. There is no such thing as a Turbo Whale Tail. The Turbo has the Tea Table, in which the rubber on the sides and trailing edge are upturned. The Carrera tail has a flatter profile and looks like a whale tail from the top, thus the name.

Of course there is. Actually, there are at least 2 styles.
The first came on the 1976/1977 911 Turbo and looked like this: ![]() The later 911 Turbo with an intercooler had this whale tail (also called the tea tray): ![]() You can get all precise and and try and say the later 930 tail is not a whale tail....but it is a whale tail...just a different style.

Thanks everyone for all the insightful answers.
Looking at this 1986 PORSCHE 911 3.2 CARRERA SUPERSPORT TARGA from the UK. Which spoiler is this as a part of the M491 package? https://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk/events/2021-auctions/the-london-classic-car-show-sale-2021/the-london-classic-car-show-sale-2021/cars-view-all-110-lots-here/1986-porsche-911-3.2-carrera-supersport-targa |
