1974 backdate - paint question

Pelican community -

Backdating my '74 Targa and changing the color from guards red. Would appreciate some thoughts on whether I should stick to a '68-'73 color or does it matter at this point? I've already backdated, so any purist won't care about the car, so I should just balance what I want to drive around in and resale value.

Throw your favorite colors out there.

Top colors:
1) Golf Blue
2) Tangerine
3) Slate Grey
4) Albert Blue
5) Signal Yellow
6) Irish Green

My dad has a Glacier blue 73 and an Albert blue 70 and both colors look awesome, especially in the sun.

I'm a big fan of greens these days. Irish Green would be fabulous.

Viper green is another one to consider.

Plus the added benefit of using green cars only parking.

Irish Green all day, but I'm biased with my own '74 backdate project.

I am a huge fan of green also. If mine ever needed a repaint that in the route I would go. More toward the darker green. Viper green not so much !!

It’s your car, paint it your color.

Only observation I have is you mention long wheelbase colors are desired. Golf Blue is SWB. Gulf Blue is LWB. But again, paint it what you like. Gulf Blue would be my choice if it were mine.

Wait, there's a Golf Blue? You learn something every day. I thought it was a typo (this coming from a guy who is painting his car Gulf blue!

Industrialando Congrats. One of my concerns is I flared the rear fenders and think darker colors work better, which is limiting my color selection. When I started the project it was going to be signal yellow or tangerine. My interior is original - blue/black.

75 911s - https://www.rennbow.org/porsche-colors/GulfBlue%20(Dark)
Gulf Blue (darker - from '68). As mentioned above, Golf Blue is being used on the new models - https://www.google.com/search?q=Porsche+911+Golf+Blue+paint&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiPrpXjw9HyAhUTJzQIHZa0BXwQ_AUoAXoECAEQA w&biw=1536&bih=753#imgrc=bn32ph40vKg7RM

The shop where I have the car painted did a Golf Blue on an older model and the contrast when it is inside versus outside is interesting. Personally think the lighter (mexico blue, gulf blue, etc. don't work great on Targas because of the limited surface area.

If you want a darker blue, the Sunoco blue used on Roger Penske’s personal RS targa has always been a favorite of mine.

If you want yellow, light yellow, aka summer yellow or limonengelb is the correct color. There were plenty of 74-75 Carrera targa cars done that color.

Wow - this is crazy - I was researching backdate colours last night going through the *exact* thought process as the OP. First time doing this ever....

I pop onto Pelican during a break (cough) at work and this post is at the top of the list.

Anyway - my thinking last night was that I would prefer to stick to a period correct colour. Problem is that I really like Mocha Brown and that didn't start until the SC era - and the only brown that was in plat for 72-73 was Sepia...which is only ok.

So that had me thinking the light (dove?) grey or Irish green....Either way - I would stick to a period correct colour.

jwetering - congrats on the backdate.

I've spent countless hrs discussing if I should pick a period correct paint color, and in my opinion there's no consensus on a backdate. Once I added flares on a Targa it opened any paint option. Still have matching engine and I'm not really touching the interior.

My wife has been pushing for Irish Green, but I'm not sure how it would look on a targa.

Idea - You can get vinyl wrap samples in different colors - try some samples on different parts of the car and see what you like.

My '75 Targa (not back-dated) is silver; Irish Green was my close second choice. I think Irish Green would look awesome on a Targa especially if you have the chrome bright work and brushed stainless Targa bar for accent.
