Advice with first time engine and transmission removal

Just started the process of removing my engine and transmission. I have Wayne’s 101 project book as well Bentley manual. I can’t seem to find any info for removing both engine and transmission at the same time. I don’t really need to remove transmission as i’am installing a new engine. From what I have been reading, it’s easier to remove both at the same time. Anyone have a link that would give me some insight on what steps I need to remove both. Or should I leave transmission in. Any help would be appreciated!!

Cheers,
D

You’ll need more experience if you desire to leave the trans in the chassis
To do it, you need to really think getting it out and getting it back on the trans.

We don't know what year your car is, so can't really help much. Maybe post it in your sig for future reference? Some you can, some you should remove together.

I use two floor jacks to remove engine and transmission out as one unit. The floor jack under the engine has a furniture dolly with a square piece of plywood screwed down to it. I jack the dolly with plywood up until it meets the heat exchangers.

Prior to that though you have to disconnect everything. Throttle linkages, fuel lines, starter cable, cv axles, shift coupler, transmission ground strap, etc.

Once I have all that disconnected I support engine with method mentioned above and transmission with another floor jack, I remove the two bolts at the transmission support, and the two at the engine. I will then carefully start lowering the engine while making sure the the transmission clears the tunnel, and also lower the transmission. Once on the ground both jacks can be removed as the weight is supported by the furniture dolly.

Now I jack the car up little on each side until the car is high enough to pull the engine out the back from underneath. I use jack stands to support the car.

That is my rough, quick explanation of how I do it. Takes me an hour or two depending on how fast I get everything disconnected. It's not too bad really.

Thank you all for responding. My car is a 78 911sc. After some time searching the forums and google. I found this article from FCP EURO.

I guess I should have spent a little more time searching. Again, thank you for your reply's.

Just did this last year. The FCP Euro guide is a good one.

I used a 500 lb lift table bought from Harbor Freight for about $100. Having a lift of some sort helps too but is not strictly necessary.

I had never done it before and dropping the engine and trans by myself was actually pretty easy. I had it on the lift table in a couple of hours. I reinstalled the motor a year later and found that more of a challenge. Get a helper when the time comes to put the drivetrain back in.

Good luck. You will be glad you did it yourself and learn a ton about the car as you go.

Regards

Did not look at the blog. Few things helped me on my 78 SC.

1.) Crows foot wrench to fit the oil hose on the crossover, only the nut on the oil line turns. Hold the crossover nut with wrench one and breaker bar and crows foot on the line. I used a jack and block of wood to keep crossover in place. Voilet ... line off
(I'm not a gorilla). Maybe time for new lines if they ooze some oil.

2 Once all disconnected and ready to drop the engine, I lowered the car down to my receiver-wood/Motor Cycle jack. Then dropped the engine to this a few inches. Once the engine on the wood, I raised the car to extraction height. And in the process (along the way) disconnected the transmission and placed second jack floor jack and 4x4 block under trans.

3.) Install: Be aware of the hoses in the rear of the engine (breather and the CIS boot), as I got mine caught on the install and it would not slide into place until I figured this out. Also, I have always needed to bend my mounting bracket a bit to get those motor mount bolts started to pull the engine in place.

4.) I took off my bumper and valance as the car was getting painted anyway. Might not be needed for clearance, depends on your lift method. (How high you get the car).

5.) Do not overlook the speedo line on the 4,5,6 side of the engine. Disconnect it

Good luck

Yep, I used the harbor freight lift table too. Works great, more versatile than atv jack, and you’ll find tons of use for it. You do need to build a 2x4 subframe and attach to your motor so it has a flat contact patch.

Make a list of ALL the the things you disconnect or remove.
Put EVERYTHING removed in zip bags with identification.
Attention to detail.
No surprises on start up.
Have fun.

I R&R'd my engine and trans last winter for the first time. How you remove it will depend on your available equipment. I have a 2 post lift so I made a tilting table on a heavy duty warehouse cart that I had such that I lifted the car away from the engine.
