Here is what I paid Advance. It was $26 to ship from Georgia to Texas at my local UPS store.

Got my booster back from Cardone and Advance today.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1660916847.jpg

My DIY booster refresh is still working fine. Wanted to post that the freeplay you are feeling with these rebuilt boosters is correct. I was surprised how hard it was to retrain my brain with the booster working properly. I was so used to it acting the old way, that I am expecting it when I use the brakes. Thanks to the two members that are documenting the Cardone/Advanced rebuild process. Not sure why they don't repaint them, but understand at the price point, certainly the owner could hit it with a rattle can or some clear. Mark

Thanks for the update, Mark.
I’m going to paint mine before I install it but minus paint cost I’m into this booster rebuild for $166 and it took 2 weeks from shipping to picking the booster back up. |
You really can't beat that.

Apparently available as a rebuild service through Rock Auto in Canuck Bucks to boot!

Thought I’d chime in and share here about brake boosters…which I thought had a diaphragm vacuum leak problem but couldn’t find source of the hiss when braking, but no affect on the pedal feel. While removing old carpeting and footboard from my 77, I noticed a 12” section of rubber hose coming from the engine’s hard line, through the tunnel and leading up to the trunk booster. Ok, found the source of the hissing! Hose had large crack in the bend by the gas pedal after the band clamp and smaller crack below the top clamp were the fit into the metal stubs at both ends.
Fixed the leak temporarily with some silicone “rescue” tape for now until I can get some new lengths and change out all these later on…but for now I think this temp fix caused the warm idle to drop down to 5-600 rpm. If this were an undetected vacuum leak over the decades, did previous owner/mechanic possibly have set the idle speed and mixture to compensate ? Prior to this temp fix there were some start issues like surging but idle did settle down and level off to 950 rpm when engine warmed. Now, it’s steady 5-600 maybe a bit rich but not obvious. This too is my first 911 so the intricacies and quirks are all new to me. Any thoughts….? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1661038713.jpg |
@ EC900 Hello, it's easy enough to increase the idle back without necessarily adjusting the fuel mixture assuming CIS fuel injection. There is a large thumb screw on the L/S of the throttle body. You might need a flashlight to find it, but once you know where it is, screwing it out will increase the idle speed. I would not recommend adjusting the fuel mixture if you are unfamiliar with CIS. Its not difficult, but access is not so easy on the Porsche.
A vacuum leak would have been unmetered air going into the engine bypassing the air flow sensor plate so potentially lean. If you increase the idle as I suggest, more air will move across the plate increasing fuel flow to the injectors. So you may find it's acceptable. Good luck. I actually came back for the info on sending one out for another owner. |
Thanks @MarkWard. Was able to adjust the idle back up to 950-1000 on the tach, whether it accurate is another thing. I’m still have a bit of idle drop and stall at stop lights. I do believe it’s time for a specialist to check on the mixture, seems rich, as well as other nuances. Thanks again

Update to this thread, my booster is still working fine after tearing it apart, cleaning rust, and reassembly. We did have an owner with a 79 that needed a booster. Gave the above information to 2 Advance Auto Parts in our area. The first one stated they don't do that. The second Advance said they called Cardone and Cardone does not do them. So as I suspected, your success may be limited to certain Advanced auto parts in individual's areas. Perhaps the one member that works at Autozone could set up a side business where members send the booster to him with prepayment plus a "handling" fee.

I’d try another advance. Pampadori spells it out pretty clearly in post 17 of this thread, you can also see the part # on my receipt. I believe you just need an employee that is willing to (probably) learn something new. The manager that ended up helping me had been with advance for 15+ years.

We are in South Florida. Turn over is high and the clerks are there to ring up what is on the counter. I provided a copy of the above receipt. No doubt, the right person could use the provided information above and with a helpful clerk get this done. Just wanted to share our experience.

Just wanted to wrap up my experience here. I installed my rebuilt brake booster today and it is working perfectly.
My main issue was a vacuum leak when the pedal was depressed. Very obvious with PMO carbs because I would lose a cylinder (too lean) at idle. The car has never had this much vacuum assist previously, I’m going to have to re learn how to drive it ! |
This is such a great thread. 2 week turn around a couple hundred bucks for a refreshed booster? I'm interested!

I read this thread in March, and am taking a pass at using Advance to rebuild my booster. My booster diaphragm must have had a pinhole puncture, as I was chasing a slow brake fluid loss. Corrosion under the booster, but thankfully not on the body - yet. Glad I'm rebuilding things now.
Anyways, went to my local Advance Auto with the highest rating. I was told to come back the next day when the 10 year veteran was present. I was provided a Cardone form to fill out, but unlike other users, was not told to mail the goods myself. I brought my booster into Advance and, after filling out their form and paying, left the booster there. They told me an estimated 2-3 week rebuild period. In case anyone was curious, this is still a service offered (and 10% the cost of a patrick motorsport rebuild!) I'll update in the future, but so far, feeling optimistic. |
Subscribed as I may be heading down this road soon

Couldn't be happier with the results. My booster had crust and rust on the underside, and didn't have the rubber boot on the front...
All wrongs righted by Cardone, for ~$160 all said and done. Couldn't be happier. Thanks for sharing this info everyone! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703814418.jpg |
Reviving this 911 SC Brake Booster thread--- RE: rebuilding service by Cardone.
I am finally getting to addressing the MC and booster for my SC. So revisited Advance Auto and O'Reilly websites to search for the MC for my 911 SC. I found that both OReilly and Advance Auto still offer 'remanufactured' MC, but they are not branded "Cardone" anymore. OReilley brands it "BrakeBest" and AdvanceAuto brands it "Wearever". Anyone have insights on the branding, or if they are still remanufactured by Cardone? The part # 53-5755 is still same as the the Cardone part #. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/wearever-vacuum-brake-booster-without-master-cylinder-53-5755/18690449-P?selectedStore=8799#top https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/wearever-vacuum-brake-booster-without-master-cylinder-53-5755/18690449-P?selectedStore=8799#top |
I don’t have an answer, but prior they were having you send yours for rebuild. It wasn’t an exchange situation. You paid at the store and they provided shipping instructions. Someone above posted the invoice. Print a copy and head to the local store. I wouldn’t trust an exchange until I had it installed and working before turning in my core.
