‘77 Carrera 3.0 Steering Wheel Question

My ‘77 C3.0 has this 3-Spoke steering wheel. Is this rubber wheel the base for a leather wrapped wheel? It’s been like this since I acquired the car in 2014. I’m thinking the PO removed the worn leather cover exposing what I have here. Could there have been a 3-Spoke option that wasn’t leather wrapped? The car was delivered in Frankfurt.

Thanks!

Pulled it apart. The wheel has VDM markings and VW on the hub. Looks like you are correct it could be a reproduction wheel. VDM comes up when I google search and Sierra Madre seems to carry them. There’s an identical wheel listed on eBay listed for a 944/951. Surprised it’s not leather wrapped.

Hub date code is 46th week of 1976 so that matches up with the production date of the car.

Send it out to Dallas Customs and let them wrap it in leather. They do great work; just had mine done for $509 including shipping.

Wow, I remember them being around $300 7-8 years ago. I may give it a shot myself or have a local upholstery shop 5 minutes up the street from me tackle it.

Not sure but once recovered it might be a so-called fat rimmed wheel. Mucho Dinero in that case. Keep it!

Out of curiosity, once it is re-wrapped, measure the rim's circumference and compare it to known wheels (a search here will provide data)
