Smog Pump
I'm still fairly new to this. I have a 1979 3.0L engine in my 76S. It appears to be complete, and stock. What's the consensus on the smog pump. At the end of an Autocross two weeks ago someone told me that removing the belt would be good for 10-15hp, and would help it run cooler to!
I took it off, but haven't had an opportunity to even do a seat of the pants dyno on it. Would the car have any chance of passing emmissions without the pump? If not I'll leave it in there. What have all you California 3.0 owners done?

Some people just remove them, and only reinstall at smog check time.
Without it, you will fail the visual inspection, as the tech has a cheat sheet of what to look for (in California anyway...). Tom |

Did the 76 have a pump? If it did...you will most likely be expected to have one on inspection....."I" would NOT mention that the motor is a later model to the smog tech. THAT triggers a trip to the CARB/BAR referee. Unless the car has already been smogged with this motor and has a silver sticker in the door jam certifying that the new engine complies with the 79 3.0 smog requirements.
I would also suggest a smog shop that does not specialize in Porsche. The less experienced the better....

The pump doesn't seem to have much resistance, so 10-15 hp seems highly unlikely. I've driven with and without it, and noticed no difference in power or oil temp.
Also, when I went to get my car smogged once, the little vacuum line to the pump had fallen off. That apparently causes the pump to not function. Luckily, I had it pre-checked before doing the smog, because without the pump, it failed miserably. Simply putting the vacuum line back on caused it to pass smog easily, with no other changes. FWIW. |

try a search here on the forum, there have been some good threads on it previously. if you take it out of service there is a port you will want to plug and i think there was a recomendation that you lube something on it to keep it from freezing up.
