Chevy HEI distributor in aluminum case 911 2.8
After a while of messing around with different ignition systems on my 911 powered 356 I decided to go a vastly different route. I sourced a brand new HEI distributor for a straight 6 Chevy and what do you know it fit! I then modified the shaft to adapt an early distributor gear (with proper spacing and backlash), modified my spark plug wire ends to fit the new distributor, modified the wiring harness a little bit to power the HEI unit and the car started right up! All you have to do is just look at the key menacingly and the car lights off perfectly.
![]() ![]() ![]() I've tried MSD boxes but they are vastly superior as wheel chocks. With the new distributor you also get rid of having to adjust points because there isn't any! Plus theres a ton of aftermarket HEI modules for your application. What do you guys think genius or madness? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Same size oring for sealing?
How are you bolting it so timing doesn't wander? Pretty nice mod to save $$$$ |

It has a base gasket instead of a seal but it doesn't seem to leak. I also made a small metal 2 pronged fork looking thing to bolt it down (if you look up gm distributor hold down it looks something like that)

That is good thinking. Let me know what you will charge for a modded unit.
regards, al

And depending on the level of offensiveness, there is most likely a magneto version (just for fun). HAHA And for more of a "stock-ish" look, use an original style (non-HEI) with Pertronix or the Pertronix distributor itself. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/PerTronix-D106700-FlameThrower-Electronic-Distributor-L6-GM-BlK,300331.html ![]() Stock points style https://www.motorcityreman.com/dst1612.html?cmp=googleproducts&kw=dst1612&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4ZSmwvD4-AIVWcvICh0zXAf0EAQYAyABEgLUX_D_BwE ![]() Nice work, man! Since you went with an HEI, these guys make an ignition module that allows you to program the advance curve and timing with you iphone/android via bluetooth. It also has a rev limiter function and a "kill switch" to keep thieves from driving away with your car.
They also have a video to explain how it's done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neiyDK0wQRM |

That is creative. HEI is excellent.
I always wanted to talk with the guy below. He was once an ignition specialist for the factory effort at Daytona by Kawasaki in the 70s. Don’t let his old appearing site fool you, he knows his stuff. He likes to hide the HEI in stock distributors but he hasn’t done a Bosch or Marelli unit yet. https://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/

Good job, I love the adaptation, this is what car crafting is all about, you are to be commended for solving a long term problem in these old cars that cost a lot of money to resolve. Now go look up my Holley 2 barrel on a SC air box..

To get a better feel for the effort involved, do you have a picture of the entire set up installed? I'd be interested to see the distributor, coil, HEI module and spark plug wire ends installed.
