absolutely. It's nice having a POS to drive so you don't have to worry about dings, vandals, etc. etc.

As cool as it is owning a nice car it sucks to have to dote and worry about it all the time when you're out and about. A clunker lets you get the job done. It's a convienence thing.

My 77 benz is for the lazy non - car I don't care guy in me... It was FREE, it's rusting, and it drinks oil like it's a dying 911. Even missing door trim, windows don't roll down. It's got a grass green interior it's as big and ugly as sin itself and it's sole mission is to take shots and go places I'd wouldn't even dream of taking the Porsche. Gets washed once maybe every 6 months or so. My porsche gets waxed more than that in that time.

I'd go insane if I came back and there was a ding in my 911. Thank god for my clunker.

I currently have a couple alternative means of transportation that relieve the anxiety from Porschenoia. It never seems to fail the fact that you cannot own something nice and not have someone else want to fuch it up. Having had my car recently repainted, I am wanting to keep it pristine for as long as it's possible and still enjoy driving it. Every dent and ding on the utility car has been left by inconsiderate people whipping open their vehicle's doors and unskilled drivers parallel parking their trailer balled truck/SUVs. It's a great relief that it is this car that bears the brunt and not the valued SC.

Well, you do need something to go to Home Depot. I have a beater Explorer that I can haul junk around in. I don't know how I get on without it.

I have a 1993 Ford Escort (I do work for Ford , after all...) that I use as my winter car and "bad weather" car. The 911 is driven on weekends and on nice weekdays. It's convenienent having a second car to haul stuff around, go to Home Depot, etc... The Escort makes me appreciate the Porsche all the more!!!

I used to have an Escort beater, but the po-po towed it away and wouldn't give it back, even in cube form.

How about another Porsche?

I usually drive a pick-up, but I also have a 944. Fun car, and no worries an a parking lot.

Or find a 74-77 911 that's a bit rough around the edges, and leave it that way.

Sonic:

I know exactly what you mean.

I love my '73 and, like you , could spend all day in it. (No matter how bad my mood, I'm always smiling after a drive. ) Still it was difficult working around the rain, going on those quick trips which never allow the motor to properly warm up, worrying about dents, worring about theft (once even caught a couple of kids trying to nab my crested valve stem covers outside a movie theatre) and then there's the limited "cargo" space issue.

I found the perfect companion vehicle in an '03 Audi A4 wagon and it's still in the Porsche/ VW/ Audi family (well, kind of anyway).

That said, on a sunny day, the '73 still dawns the roof racks and mtn bikes for those athletic jaunts :-)

Depends where you live...If you drive into a major metropolitan city at night and have to park on the street, even once - "someones gonna surely F-ck up your car", no matter what kind of car it is.

I just went through this with my Eurovan- broken window, stolen CD player and CDs, ripped up dash - it sucks. I will not drive into Seattle at night again unless I absolutely have to and can park in secured underground parking. Makes you wonder what the world's coming to...

Definitely should have a beater car too.

May I recommend a 78 Mercedes 280CE. Paint falling off, carpets torn, cracking dash, interior littered with junk, don't bother to lock it and sometimes don't even roll up the windows. But, being a Merc, it runs and runs and runs.

Get a beater.

The only problem with a normal bore-beater is just that: it'll bore the tears off you if you're used to the 911 in just about every way.
One thing I noticed- that I didn't expect to- is that the general motoring population is ruder when you don't drive a 911. They don't let you in or wave as much.

I second the Benz as a good beater. heck, it's German (so you'll know your way around it), they're solid, bordering on billet, and are reasonably priced. Go for ever too.

Still miss my '72 280 CE coupe. It was a wonderful old cruiser.
Cossie Benz I've got now is about 3/4 911 fun value with 4 seats....

I love my 92 civic with 200k miles. It is great for runs to the store and those days when it's suppose to storm all day. I just can't see myself using the Pcar to haul lumber, bags of dirt, boxes of junk...

targa911S... finally someone caught my Tele reference. I figured someone else here played. The Tele is blue... My bass is a Fender P-Bass Lyte Deluxe, about 2 years old. Doesnt sound that good, I need to get rid of the stock Fender pickups... any suggestions on replacement pickups? I like a deep sound, but also cuts through the mix.

Right you are! Someone is going to want to buy, and drive, a cherry Carrera Cabriolet some day, and you're keeping it for them. They'll appreciate your sense of restraint. In fact, I'm going to want a cream puff '97 993 some day, preferrably not red. So, perhaps you could buy and protect one of those and I'll call you in a few years. In the meantime, I'm having an absolute BLAST with a really nice SC.

He, He,

there was a guy at the store I work at the other day with a 2000 Ferarri 360 and while checking it out I couldnt' help but notice that there where two can of paint from The Home Depot on the passenger floor. Thought it was kinda humerous that somebody was using a $180,000 car for a grocery getter. He came to see me to get a spark plug for his Weed Eater Whipper snipper.

The way I see it, if you pay all that money for it, for ****** sake drive her!

Adam
