mirror direction control horizontally only ..no tilt

Before tearing into the switch why not do a continuity test across the contacts while manipulating the switch. For each switch position there will be two contacts that will have continuity. The two contacts with brown wire connection are internally tied together for the circuit ground connections.

Found this pic in another thread that shows the wire color code for each contact. Using this and a schematic of the circuit for your car you should be able to perform at least a continuity test through the switch to one of the mirrors without opening the switch.

I did the continuity test and found one path without, which appears as the same issue being chased here. After opening and cleaning away old grease full continuity was regained.

I need to write up that tutorial I had planned for this....

brown wires?

Arent the Brown wires just for the Mirror heat element?

Do Brown wires have to be connected into the back of the mirrors for the mirror to tilt / pan properly?

Could THIS be the reason my mirrors move horizontally and AGAIN move horizontally when I move switch to tilt mirrors?!

I’m looking at the 82 schematic and the brown ground wires provide ground for the mirror heater at terminal 4, it also provides ground for a relay coil on terminal 5.

we connected the yellow striped to power and white to ground got a click buy no movement. i can get it to pan but not tilt in any combination of wires. could it be thAt all FOUR mirrors have the same issue?! seems the odds are against it. the person who sold me the 2 last week swears he tested them for tilt and pan … do you have a schematic

Your vehicle is an 85 and the below link has the schematic for the 86. Compare your wiring to the 86 schematic.

there is only one brown wire

the passenger side only has one brown wire (drive side has two)… and aren’t the brown wires ONLY for heat to mirror’s?
