I have two schematics. In one, it shows the left mirror with the yellow wire and the right with the black...in the other it shows the right mirror with the yellow wire. Not sure if that is right hand drive vs left or if one was looking at the front of the car. If above doesn't match up for your car, you will need to do the left test for the right and vice versa.

you will see in video i didn’t have to change wires to change direction… the transformer has a reverse switch. you can see i got them working maybe not the same combo of wires as you suggested. i took aprt the other mirror that did not tilt at all.. i found the diode attached across the clutch was broken, yet it worked when i pushed the broken ends together. it then tilted!!! thinking it’s the old diodes giving me problems. it’s not so difficult to take them apart either! easy assembly as well but will need to find and change diodes.

I still can't see the video, but it seems that you have it figured out now.

Those diodes are common and should cost about a quarter online. Look for/google 1N4004.

You can test the diodes with your meter once they disconnected/out of the circuit. They will read a high resistance one way and low the other. Make sure you get them back in the same way they were to start with.

that info you gave me about having the diode in a particular direction was great info. thanks for that, so helpful… potentially saved me a headache or maybe even a motor and a headache!
what would cause a motor to tilt one way and not back? thanks again for all your help

Tilt only one way? It depends on how you are testing it. On the bench without a switch or joy stick in the car? In the car, it would most likely be a dirty or bad contact on the direction switch (joy stick). If on the bench, I would suspect that one is hooking it up wrong (or possibly a mechanical issue where the mirror is physically pushed out of place or the internal gear/clutch is physically misaligned). The wires to the motor could also be swapped.

If it is doing this on the car and you confirm that it is the direction switch, you can replace it...or save some money and open it up and clean the contacts inside (since you seem to be into this project). It would not be terribly difficult.

tested it same as others… strange. in car it didn’t tilt at all. like all others. i did clean out the switch, didn’t really didn’t dirt or corrosion.

does the length of the diode matter?.. obviously it should reach each terminal but what if it is longer than the original? can it be cut to fit?

The ceramic part is the diode. The wires at either end are just wires. They are used in many applications from circuit boards to across terminals like yours. The come with long leads and you do cut to fit.

Make sure you put them on in the same direction. They all have a little symbol on them that tells you.

The only other concern you have with soldering in diodes is to not let the actual diode (ceramic part) get too hot....so only use your soldering iron long enough to get a good solder joint. If you have a pair of hemostats, you can clip them on the wire between where you are soldering and the ceramic part. It will act as a heat sink.

Try to physically move the mirror to center with your fingers (being careful not to break it). Then try again.

It sure looks to me like the harness and connector you need...but I don't know. My car (1974) has manual windows and a single manual mirror. There are no wires in my door whatsoever.. I do not have a car like yours and never have. You need to look for yourself as it is your money.

As noted earlier, unless your connector has some numbers and a manufacturer on it, I am stuck.

Like I said, I would probably just use a meter to ensure that the connector was good (no shorts between pins) and seal it with some silicone or RTV.

If that does not work for you, here are some photos (below, from the internet) for the part number I gave you). I do not have a number for just the connector, but you might get one from a junkyard from a 911 or a Volvo or Saab. As noted, the only person I know with any of the odd connectors is the fellow that posts here that builds wiring harnesses (Timmy2). He seems to be a really good guy and knows these harnesses. Send him a PM and ask if he has/can sell you just the connector or if he has a source if you don't want to replace the harness. Obviously, you could pull the connector you need off the harness as well.
