Advice on 8” front flare to compliment 9” rear SC flare
On 1982 911sc Targa
I have always thought the Targa benefits from a wider stance, it reduces the height to width ratio that impacts the Targa silhouette more so than the coupe…. That being said; I’m reasonably happy with the SC rear for now but I’d like to give the front more shoulders if you get my meaning. Current SC stock setup is 7” front and 9” rear and I’m backdating the hood and bumpers. Front spindles lowered 19mm Turbo & ST fronts are 9” which I think will create an unbalanced appearance IMHO. I’m not likely to change my 16” fuch setup so I’m looking for the subtle 1” difference to the front end that gives a little more curve and stance. There are 3 parts to this question;

Your point about height:width ratio is why I keep thinking about doing a full turbo-body on my SC. I've looked into a lot of options. Here are my initial thoughts.
1. I reckon you'd need an experienced panel-beater to metalwork the front arches to extend the width without completely re-profiling the arch. 2. Do you mean the lips on the wheels? Like a square setup? 3. Pics of someone with 8/9 flares? Not that I'm aware of.

It seems like an obvious mod to an SC but maybe there is an obvious reason why not to do it, would love to see some pics… By lips, I meant the flares, some are rounded and others square off like the turbo flares. I had thought of turbo flares all around but decided against it for the moment. ST are another option but 4x the price for no apparent reason…. I have spent huge bucks on rust removal and my welder is sick of my face now after a year of surgery. One solution I thought might work (reluctant to provide solutions before hearing from more experienced builders) was to fit turbo front flares, then run a one inch line inward of the lip and fold at that point. I’m guessing the shape would need some work but it could also be the case that the opening is just too big with this approach…. Help needed

Buy some front flares and section them in the middle. Why would you try to cut and reshape the wheel well? That would be a major pain even for an experience panel beater.

Folding over 1 inch on the lip would be the hardest way to go.

That’s a fair comment. Have you seen this done? Do turbo front flares have wider opening at the bottom at the sill area? Is there a way to make this similar to standard opening? Thx

You could actually add some pie shaped metal to your sc flares to bring them out an inch and be done, it will raise the wheel well a tiny bit but shouldn’t be noticeable. Messing with the actual wheel arch area with that 90degree lip would be a major pain and involve shrinking metal, tipping wheel work et. Are you attempting this yourself? Or hiring someone to do it? Do a search on YouTube I’m sure there’s a video on this subject.

DPMotorsport offers a front fender that is 1" wider than stock and has the same fender line as factory flares that looks like it would be a good match for the rear. This is a solution that I've been looking at for quite some time as I too would really like to add about 1" to my front fenders without touching the rears.
Only downside is that it's only available in composite (Kevlar/CF). They do however make the same fender in a short-hood variant as well. ![]()

@Antonov - they are gorgeous, just what I want to achieve.
I found them online Of course, I have bought 2 replacement fenders, fixed issues with rust and petrol filler and converted them from G to F, throwing them out is not something I could face doing! Really helpful though because now it’s clear as day that I’m on the right track… thx

After looking at a fender the pie idea is not going to work on a 911 fender without bigger rims. your going to have to make them from scratch or buy them. It’s a good idea though I might have to add them to the fenders I’m working on. If I make a pair I’ll take photos. You could also mock some up out of foam and make them out of carbon or fiberglass.

So doing a quick and dirty comparison between the DP motorsports vs 930 turbo shows a lot of similarities. The main differences i can spot are;
So returning to an earlier post, the approach could be to use the turbo fender and modify to be similar to the DP motorsport fender. Approach could be;
There could be an argument for using the original SC lip but there is potentially a lot of welding and heat around a fairly small area which can’t be good… Thoughts? ![]()
