Sorry, one more question. What nuts, spacers or washers go in between the back of the fan and the front of the alternator On the shaft? I only have one and it is wide on the bottom and narrow at the top. It was installed with the wide end against the back of the fan & the narrow end of this spacer/washer faced the alternator. Was this correct? Are there other nuts, spacers or washers that go between fan and alternator on shaft? And do you have a drawing/diagram of an exploded view which shows them all? Thanks.

You should have 6 shims
![]() With OEM belt 3 in 3 out with Continental Belt 1 in 5 out. Welcome aboard, you will love it here :-) BTW, get a magnet and check the bottom of the cam pulley, you may have some below.

Thanks Drago - however shims aren't the issue, I've got that covered. I need to know what goes behind the fan, between it and the alternator on the alternator shaft. The only washer/spacer I found there looks kind of like this (smaller on top, larger on bottom):

Here is the only washer / spacer that I had behind the fan between it and the front of the alternator.
Please let me know if that's the only one that should be there. Thanks ![]() |

Strange there should not be any there?
Here is what is behind my 3.2: ![]() What brand of alternator do you have? Can you take a pick of your alternator and back of your fan?

That does not appear to be a stock item, though it might be a shim for a non-stock alternator setup in your car. We need first to determine what is in your car, and then compare that to what should be in your car. It may be that you have the right equipment at hand, but let's find out.
Do take and post several pics of the alternator, esp. the end as in the pic directly above. In my SC, you have a fan slid directly on that shaft with no spacers. Next, the spacers, then the outer pulley half, etc. Often owners lose the spacers or do not understand the 6 spacer rule. When I R&R's my Valeo alternator recently, I made sure to assemble the washers, pulley, washers, cup washer and tightened up the 24mm nut. This does two things: first, it flattens the often bent washers, which makes installation easier, and second, it confirms the overall stack is correct by pulling and pushing on the outer pulley to note any slop - there should be NONE. Get the pics up and we will drag you out of your situation!

Thank you Brother Frank!
Okay, as you can see from my pic, you are missing the woodruff key. That is what the slot is for on the shaft. Even your fan has the notch for it. +1, that washer is not OEM that I am familiar with. There should be a thick flat washer/spacer then the woodruff key and after that, your fan. Please put your fan on with that coned washer, I would like to see how it sits inside the fan housing. I guess as long as the coned washer is the same thickness as the OEM flat washer it could work but my concern is the fan could possibly slip on the shaft and fail to cool the engine properly and or not charge your battery adequately.

Update - I put the odd shaped spacer on anyway. I think it was put there to push the fan out a bit on the alt shaft and keep the blades from scraping the housing. Reinstalled alternator and now getting a juicy 14.3v! Belt seems to spin fine, tight w/no slip, engine cooling well, and no contact b/t fan blades and housing. Hardest part seemed to be getting fan back on the shaft w/o knocking the woodruff key out.
Thanks to all for the help and advice. She runs like a dream now. ![]() |

Just so I understand, is the first pic in post #10 above your old alternator? And the rest are the new alternator, including post #13 directly above?

Pic in #13 was taken just before I reinstalled alternator and fan assembly today. I think I took pic #10 when I first removed alternator before the rebuild, when I first found that weird washer/spacer. The alternator shop was kind enough to sandblast and paint the fan and housing that silver color. I shoved that weird washer up against the back of the alternator and it came in just behind the back of the woodruff key.
Pls don't tell me I screwed this up... |

One other tidbit...I put the fan on the shaft without that weird spacer and it sat too far back in the housing. The fan blades were scraping something awful against the housing. When spacer was put in, no scraping.

I think you will be fine, it appears to be the same thickness so you should be fine now that the woodruff key is in place.
When you placed th fan on did the woodruff key go flush with the stub surface? ![]()

Almost flush with outside of the fan. When weird spacer is removed it looked more flush like yours, but again, the fan blades were then scraping too much against the housing. So much so i was afraid to reinstall it and start engine. As if the fan was so far back inside of the housing without the spacer.
You think not having woodruff key absolutely flush could be a problem? You think that unless flush, fan could push itself out and loosen the nut on the outside that holds the pulley half on? |

almost is good enough. I suppose if you ran without the shims then it would be a problem but you will not be doing that so you are good. Now go enjoy your baby ![]()
