My point exactly (see my post above). My car has 0 bar at 0 RPM.

My 88 will sometimes creep above the "9 oclock" position if I have the AC on and I'm creeping through slow traffic. I'd like to find a way to manually make the fan come on rather than wait for it to come on at a really high temp. It would be even better to have a thermostat that switches on at a lower temp. Apparently it's set pretty high on the factory oil cooler.

You should seach this site a bit better. There is an article describing how to wire up a manual fan switch, and there is discussion about replacing the porsche thermostat (~248F) with a similar BMW thermostat (~210F).
