Is the fuel line in the tunnel leaking?

Just bought a survivor car. It’s been sitting 40 years. Was goin to pull the fuel tank, clean it, and see if the car will run. I saw this and now I’m thinking the line in the tunnel is cracked or something. Idk how this stain would be here. I really hope it’s not the case I’ve read about how much of a pain it is to replace the tunnel lines

Alight photos aren't working. I'd like to get some help if possible. Car has been sitting a long time. I see a dark stain under the drive seat. If my fuel line in the tunnel is leaking, would it or could it seap through and show up there? Underneath this car looks really dry all around. Even in this stained area, the undercoating looks just like it does everywhere else down there. I just don't know what it could be, if it isn't fuel. A friend told me he thinks they leak out the ends of the tunnel, when they do. Any thoughts?

I can obviously put fuel through and see if it reaks of gas. Currently, there's no gas smell. Car hasn't been driven since 1980.

They should be replaced anyway if the car has been sitting since 1980. What year car?? There are plastic plugs following the tunnel on the floor pan (underneath).

Probably so. Its a 68 912, so no return line. Maybe the job is a lot easier on an earlier car since theres only the one line.

I got on 912 BBS. This is a metal line so I think I'm good.

The master cylinder is just in front of the driver's seat on my car...not sure about a '68.

Damp spots in a car interior might be just about anything after sitting for 40 years. Fuel, brake fluid, water intrusion, animals...

68 is pretty old so corrosion may be a possibility. I would probably want to ultimately change them out. Its not too bad if you have the engine out, and there's a few good YouTube videos documenting the process.

You can also add a return line at the same time in case you ever want to drop in a big motor.

Good point! haha The more I thought about it the more I think it's fine. It is metal so I doubt it was fuel. If I start smelling a lot of fuel once I get it going..I guess I'll know haha. I did see a great YT video on the job. I looks like a bugger, but I refuse to do a job like this on jack stands. On a lift, I don't think it's as bad as I thought.

Fuel is very volatile so evaporates quickly- if it’s a dark stain it’s likely not that. Dark interior stains are often spilled drinks more than anything.

Eh...if it is a 912, it probably just was passed by a 911 and soiled itself.

That makes sense Coastr. The stain is up underneath the car. I'm still not sure what it is. Could be brake fluid, I'm not sure. Something leaked or seeped just in front of the shifter access cover. I can see where it was from inside the access cover. All the original rubber grommets under the car are still there except for the one right under this location. Whatever it was must have eaten through that rubber.

Early Porsche models through 73 have steel tunnel lines. If one were to leak you would absolutely know it.

Must be something else. Send me that photo and I will post it so we all can evaluate / peruse the spot you describe.

This won't be hard to correct.

I can see you are trying to upload a PNG file. That is your problem. Just simply rename the photo from .png to .jpg. No conversion software needed. Just a new file extension.

ONLY a jpg will upload and work on the site.

Mine was just the hose from the fuel pump to the rear of the car. On my 85 911 I just replace the supply and return line. Pain in the butt to do with the engine in place, but doable.
