looking for help on unusual engine serial number
 

Hi All,
Trying to help figure what this actually is. I know the pictures are not the best, engine was in a corner and not easy to access.
Serial number looks to be 901 332 or *01 332* which doesn't line up with 911 serial number listings I can find.

Engine is supposed to be a 2.7RS spec engine purchased loose from the factory back in the day. The pistons and cylinders look correct for the description. Could not get in closer to clean and see numbers better. Did loose engines back in the day have different serial numbers? I once had a car with replacement case and no serial numbers, so I know not all cases line up to listings.

You are correct in that Porsche did assign different types of number ranges at times for replacement engines. Get in there and clean up the area where the type # will be and report back to us

I hope to get back at some point and clean the area to see if there is a type number stamped.

That is the aluminum engine case of a first series 901/01 engine with serial starting at 900101. If you clean the area behind the serial # and locate the type # 901/01 you will also find the number 1232 which tells you precisely how early the engine is. You desperately need to update your search criteria for 911 engine serial #'s.

Looks like 901 332. Per this site, it is an early 1965 2.0 L motor. Should have a stamp 901/01 nearby.

Thanks for the replies. Engine is not Aluminum case, I know what those look like. Engine is buried behind other Porsche stuff, had my arm at full length to get what I could of pics, Buried back in a corner behind parts. I hope to get back to clean engine enough to get better pics of numbers. Lots of interesting stories to go along with parts (speedster engine was on bench). This engine was purchased from Porsche factory in 73/74 as loose engine. It was purchased by ex-racer with close ties to factory (racing speedsters, 904's, 356 etc). It has been in storage for 40+ years. I am trying to find out if there is a listing of engine serial numbers that were not sold with cars and maybe use a different numbering system. I do not know if loose engines even have a type number. Hoping some info from people there involved with racing back in the day when you just ordered up a spare RS spec engine might have some insite.

Oddly, on my computer, it looks like it is aluminum.
