Do You Know or Can You Guess
I’m hoping to generate some interesting knowledge about 911’s. A posting of some we see and don’t know what it is about.
I have a good idea as to what this is and why it’s there. This a device to help prevent uncontrolled throttle advance when either the end of the car gets smooched. My engineer brain… Any other thoughts? ![]() Last edited by porschedude996; 11-12-2022 at 12:34 PM.. |

I think it's more rudimentary than that, though I could be wrong. The wider opening simply allows you to remove the pull rod from the bell crank pin. With the engine off pull that rod towards the front of the car and voila, it will come off the bell crank pin. It might come off in a rear collision, however if the hit is that hard I'm not sure if I'll be around to argue the point.

I believe it provides the travel needed by the cruise control. Without that loop, I'm guessing the cruise servo would push the entire throttle cable, including the accelerator pedal.
Although, if memory serves correctly, that same loop was in the early 911's, well before cruise was available. So, I may be all wet!

So you can tune carbs by opening and closing the throttle at the engine without moving the cable. And as mentioed, easy to remove.

Also, a good item to carry as a spare. Over the years I’ve heard of two failing on 912’s on various trips.

I agree...a bit of a safety device and easily removed for engine drops/maint etc.

Your clutch cable is installed incorrectly. The bowden tube should be OVER the throttle bell crank!

I agree, this is an older photo. I am still sorting out previous 39 years of mis-assembly. I took pictures of the clutch activation before I took everything apart. No contact with the bell-crank and have gentle curves.
