How to make my 911 sound like a v8??
 

What can I do to make this thing sound mean? I have 74 heat exchangers on it now and just redid the top end. Two in one out exhaust. Thing sounds great when it it is above three thousand rpms but below this it sounds like a bug!!

Why would you want to make is sound like a V8? One of the reasons I fell in love with the 911 was becasue of the unmistakeable sound of the flat 6. It sounds more precise than a slopy American V8. There are many aftermarket mufflers that will change the sound.

Put a 2.25" crossover 'H' pipe and twin glasspacks or Supertrapps ...

did you ever consider a cam with big overlap, and higher compression pistons.. then the rest is easy.............Ron

take the muffler off or put on a 2 in 2 out flowmaster. It will then sound meaner

i ran SSI and dual out dansk on my SC engine...

hotrodders always asked me if I had a v-8 in there...really low growl/rumble

i prefer the stock sound with all the whirring and air-cooled noise

install a 993 3.6 with nothing but the 993 cat...it will sound like a bigblock waiting to run the qtr! Ha Ha...I know this. If you would like I can post a link to a small video clip to show ya.

Install a mega stereo with volume control linked to your accelerator and play tapes of V8s ;)

Heh heh. Funny how this thread pops up right after I put a new exhaust on my 911. I've heard several 911s that sounded more like V8s and was ABSOLUTELY sure that I didn't want mine to sound like a V8!

Yesterday at Ring Knutstorp I met an american who drove a 944 Turbo. Being car nuts we talked about all things Porsche and he just couldn't understand all the fuss about 911s and their flat 6 aircooled sound!? I explained things for him and he responded that he considered a US V8 more sporty :rolleyes: So I just told him; the 911 is unique, the US V8s aren't. I must admit though that the Shelby Cobra replica that got us talking did sound *very* good :D

apparently you can buy a V8 conversion kit for $1,500, then all you need to do is drop in a V8 and you've got the real thing!

The Triad exhaust I am using makes quite a low rumble below 3000 rpm. Above 3000 rpm, it sounds like an F1 car. It has essentially what Warren suggests. It has a fat expansion/resonance chamber that collects exhaust from both sides of the engine. This improves low end torque and also produces that deep, hollow sound I have always associated with drag cars. That same sounds was also present when I was running with a hollow CAT.

What's a triad exhaust? And logic would tell me that if you want a 6 to sound like an 8, add two cylinders. :)

on the flow masters, are people modfying a bursch or sebring exhaust? or is there a 2 in 2 out flowmaster that can be bought off the shelf?

Flowmaster people are having a shop custom bend the pipes to fit a Flowmaster crossover muffler.

There are two versions of this muffler.

Single-in, dual-out unit is Flowmaster part # 42583. Inlet and outlets are 2-1/2 in. dia.

Dual-in, dual-out unit is Flowmaster part # 42582. Inlets and outlets are 2-1/2 in. dia.

Dynomax also makes this muffler size/configuration in varying materials. They come in UltraFlo welded, UltraFlo SS (stainless steel), and SuperTurbo. The SuperTurbo is priced about the same as the Flowmaster (around $70something from Summit Racing). The UltraFlo's are around $150 and a little sturdier.

UltraFlo SS:

#17266 = 1 in, 2 out, 2-1/2 in. dia.

SuperTurbo:

#17725 = 2 in, 2 out, 2-1/4 in. dia.
#17739 = 1 in, 2 out, 2-1/2 in. dia.

UltraFlo Welded:

#17231 = 2 in, 2 out, 2-1/2 in. dia.

edit: don't use this #17231 muffler! The 17231 is not a crossflow design. It's a same side in / same side out design as shown here:

The same goes for the #17276, 17280 (straight thru design, not crossflow) UltraFlo SS mufflers. Not a good application for SSI's as it's too wide and won't work well:

I'm glad you like the Triad exhaust so far Dave, but to be fair we should probably reserve final judgment until after it's attached to the car. Good luck with the installation, it should be easy.

As for the Bursch, I don't think it can be modified in any way to be a "dual out." There isn't enough room on the right side of the muffler for such a modification.
