Carrera, haven't got that far yet. just drilled a starter hole for the holes last night and then realized didn't have the correct drill bits to finish the job. Interesting challenge. You really only need to hold the plate to the door to get the first rivet in. How about dropping a string from one of the holes into your door, tie it to the plate and then drawing it up? Might have to use a coat hanger bent 90 degrees at the end (say qtr inch), stick it thru one of the rivet holes to hook the plate to hold in position. May have to use a long screwdriver thru the window sill opening to hold the plate firm against the inside of the door to get the rivet in or somehow find a way to clamp the plate to the door. My car is stripped for painting and I have the inside door panels removed already. Will have a challenge i think. If you find an easier way, let me know. I got a quote from the body shop, and they wanted $400 bucks each side to put these in! I think I can find a way to put them in! thanks.

Stormin,
I called a support guy at Pelican and he said I might have to cut a hole in the inner door so I can position the bracket. But I also had the same idea as you, use a string or a coat hanger. I dont have a rivit gun, I might use screws. I'll keep you posted. Thanks! |
I am having a local shop paint and install the RHS for $150. I thought that was high.
I think I can reach the spot where the stiffener goes on my '77 (but the shop put it in). I gave the shop the sketch from cowtown (6/2). I hope it is in the right place. |
carrera, i would rivet it. a rivet gun cost only about $10 bucks, and it will hold the plate secure. Screws do back out over time! I looked at the mounting spot on both sides and I think you can hold the plates to the inside of the door with a screwdriver in one of the electric window switches? I've got to finish drilling the holes and will let you know in a couple of days.....

Stormin,
I finished both mirrors this past weekend. I fished a coat hanger and hooked it on the bracket. Then I just placed it where it had to go and used rivits to hold it in. I also went to my friends shop and traced an outline of the holes for the mirrors on both sides. Then made a few copies (just in case), and taped the template on the car. Both sides only took a few hours and it came out great. If anyone needs a copy of the template, I have some. Thanks, Carlos |
Carlos,
Any idea what size of rivets you used? Cheers |
Carlos, I'd be interested in your template. Any chance you could take a picture of it and post it here?

carrera, thanks for the post. I had a paper template already and that is what i used. I finished my installation on the weekend and was going to post pic of finished product and explain what i did. It was a piece of cake. I too used two coat hangers bending the end for a hook, fished it up and held it in place with me fingers in the holes i drilled and popped two rivets in. Both sides took me less than 10 minutes. btw the paint place i got an estimate for to reinforce the area & drill the holes to mount the mirrors quoted me 8 hrs at $56/hr to do the job. go figure when they don't know what to do. rivets are eighth of an inch diameter by qtr inch rivet. Slick. So what are we talking here $10 bucks for the plate, time for measure and drilling and time for fishing the plate up and pop riveting. Wayne, do I smell another topic? You can do this in less than an hr tops! Hope this help guys.....

Colin, you'll need to get the proper drill bits to drill the holes, or if you have a friend with a machine shop, he might let you borrow the drill bits. I used the closest drill bit that my buddy had to the metric hole, only larger.

I had a shop paint and mount my RHS mirror. They used RoninLB template for positioning and traced the individual hole locations from another car. The result was perfectly positioned in that the base of the mirror is centered between the door frame and window vertical track when viewed from the driver's seat.
Thanks, Ron & Cowtown! |
Cowtown,
My template is from an actual door, so its a bit large and may not post as actual size. I will be happy to fax a copy or mail one. I used a 11X17 size paper and traced part of the door for reference. As for the size of the rivits, I think they were about 1/8". The reinforcement bracket had holes already and I just matched a rivit to it. Hope this helps Carlos |
Thanks for the info guys.
