How are flag mirrors mounted?

I just stripped and powdercoated a pair of flag mirrors to put on my '75. It's currently got an aftermarket mirror on the driver side, and none at all on the passenger side.

Before I take off a door panel, can anyone tell me basically what's involved, or have pictures of the process?

It looks like I need two small slots and a bolt hole in each mounting spot, but I'd love to see some pictures or hear about what I'm in for.

Advice/pictures on wiring would be a bonus. I got a new "joystick" switch and will need to wire that up too.

Bump...I found this image that RoninLB posted a while ago, but still need to know how the mirrors attach underneath. Anyone got a picture of the reinforcing bracket or underside hardware?

Colin,
There's actually a reinforcement plate that you need to purchase that is mounted on the inside of the door skin. It is attached via a pop rivet.
Once that is in place, the mirror itself has the "mounting device" built-in it. Hopefully someone can post a picture of what the underside of the mirror looks like.

Additionally, my understanding is that wiring it up is a pain in the a$$. I just added a mirror to my passenger side and did not wire it in.

When I was up-dating my '74 I added the flag mirrors and although it was some time ago I don't remember the wiring being
too much trouble on a car that had not had electric mirrors.
The heating element is great for those who live in colder climates.
I put the select (r/l) in the dash and the actuator in the window
top piece.

The part # for the reinforcement plate is 911-531-198-00. You should be able to get this part through our host here or even the dealer. I do not believe it is an expensive part .

To attach the rivet, all you need is a drill to make the appropriate hole and a rivet gun.

Anyone know what size of pop-rivet is required for the mounting plate? for e.g 3.2mm X 6.4mm or 3.2mm X 7.4mm etc

I ordered the RHS reinforcement at the dealer today; it was $5.71.
Obviously we need to take off the door panel to install the reinforcement. Do you drill the holes first or rivet the piece on first?

One question, how do you get the reinforment bracket up the position to be rivited? I can barely get my hand in there. From what I understand, it goes inside the door skin? Is there something I am missing?

Mine is inside the doorskin woth the electric morror wires running through it. It took a fair bit of fiddling with magnetic tools etc but the wires helped guide it up.

The reason I had to do this was because it wasn't riveted in place. When I took my mirror off to ighten, it fell into the door cavity.

The mirrors I bought doesnt have the electric wires, no problem because I wasnt going to wire them up anyway. I just have to drill the holes. the diagram from above is very usefull. Can I use that to drill the holes for the driver side as well?

I think they are the same (reversed) but don't quote me on that. Did you get a rivet with the plate? What size is it if you did?

The Left Hand Side mirror is located more to the front than the RHS.

Buy the two reinforcement plates and they will help you locate the holes.

The plates look homemade. They do have two holes for mounting but no rivits. Does a template come with the plates?

No you cant use the diagram for the drv side. that diagram is for the psg side. when I bought the mirrors I asked the po for a template traced out on paper for me where the holes were in relation to the door and window frame to help me out in my installation. He did a great job, as on the psg side i was off a mm from the diagram. Drv side was way too different, so I went with the template. the actual plates give you the size of the holes to drill so they match up when you rivet them in place but you won't be able to tell from the templates where to drill the holes. I got the part # from Wayne for the plates. If you want

Thanks, but I have the plates. I guess I will go to a friends shop and trace out the doors. I heard I may have to cut a hole inside the door to fit the plate into position. I tried to slide it up in place but can fit my hand in. How did you get the reinforcement plates into position?
