'73 seat reassembly - how do the hinges work?

I took out my seats and took them apart to clean up and paint the hinges etc.

I put one of the seats back together, and the recline lever won't move, so the seat won't lean back or forward.

When I took them apart it appeared the inside hinge was rotated 90 degrees back from the outside hinge, the rod inserted between the inside and outside hinge, then the inside twisted to the bolt point on the lower part of the seat.

I hope this makes sense!

How should this be done so the recline lever works?

I think it's just that the hinges are OLD. The passenger seat in particular just doesn't want to go back.

The seats are back in the car now but I would like to figure out how to fix this. Are the hinges easily rebuildable? From what I could tell on the driver's seat, there was a lot more play than there should be. I can't imagine the passenger side is worn out though.

Any ideas are appreciated!

What seats do you have. I just took mine apart completley to have the hinges re-chromed. The toughest part was resetting the recline spring. On the chrome hinges the recline handle is spring loaded to move a geared cog away from the stationary portion of the hinge so seat can recline. When handle is released, the cog splips back on geared part of hinge to lock the seat in position. If the handle slipped out between the sliding cog and hinge then the cog is in place all the time and the seat is locked all the time. Hope this helps.
