3.6 conversion chassis
Its been awhile, but im back at it trying to install the motor within two weeks, I thought this was gonna go as fast as everyone elses conversion, but the cold and a rise in the sugar set me back, I also had some other set backs il explain as we go, so if your doing a 3.6 conversion i mark these pages and keep in touch with Jack O, Bill V, Paul (pbs911) and others you will have questions. and Steve Timmins, Kevin
i took the drivers seat out (4 bolts) to install the 3.6 DME. There was a plate there so i bolted directily to plate with existing holes, I ran the ground to the emergency brake. I cut a hole for the harness where the c2 would have had it, i am deleting the back seat so this wasnt a problem. You will have to plug a harness that you getwith Timmins kit into the dme harness you got with the motor, this will have the wires to connect to the fuel pump, guages etc, this is pretty straight forward, i ran the harness under the carpet up into the trunk. I installed the coils on the relay panel using a stock mounting bolt, dont forget the grounds. Take off the fuel filter and the accumulator (if you have it), screw the new fuel filter to the pressure side, FIRST problem, my car had 12mm fittings instead of the 14mm ball fitting so Steve is sending a early fuel filter that will match up. install the braided line to the other side of the fuel filter the route it to the passenger side of the engine compartment, I guess some people go under the intake, I will run it against the fire wall. THE BIG PROBLEM, this is where everything came to a stop for several days, your existing chassis harness will be a 14 pin male, your new harness comming from the dme will be a bigger 12 pin female, the engine harness will have a 14 pin female and a 12 pin male, simply connect when the motor is in, right, well i got to looking and i have two 14 pinfemales on the engine harness, something is not right, after an extended phone conversation with Steve Timmins we decided that the 14 pin on the engine harness had been changed, after opening up the plug it was obvious that it had been. We also discovered that i was sent Carrera (3.2) side tin instead of 3.6. I am currently waiting to see How fast Harald can get the parts to me from germany. I feel many of you should be interested in the amount of time it takes. I finaly got B&B to sell me a exhaust hanger which will be here this week. ill keep you updated as soon as the parts arrive. On another note, I will say that Mr Timmins has been more help then anyone can imagine, there are some threads debating this, Steve has went totaly out of his way with phone calls etc to help figure out the wiring problem noted above, he didnt sell me the engine or harness but helped me figure it out, and he was all ways happy and seemed to be just a genuine porsche guy, Thanks Steve. here are a few pictures ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Well documented...thanks for the info. I may be doing this in the next year or so on my '72. You're putting a 3.6 into a Carrera?

Kevin,
Good work and hope you get it fired up shortly. I will get my "new" 3.6 in a week or so. Steve is shipping it out today and its Bill Verburg's old motor. Good that you put this up now as its a big help. What year is your car? Joe

Kevin, glad you got the 2-14pins and the fuel filter worked out. It seems that the little things differ between conversions. that's what really takes the time and why it is difficult to have a set procedure. It's really on a car-by-car basis. Can't wait to hear your first post with the new motor. And be sure not to connect the battery until you have everything hooked up to avoid shorting out the DME.

Paul the harness has been altered its nor factory, i can at least see the light at the end of tunnel know, the fuel filter was really no big deal, i would have had some adapters made had Steve no known what filter will work without an adapter.
Joeaksa, my car is a 82, you can do a search on 3.6 conversion and you will come up with the earlier post i did, it was like 3.6 conversion part one, part two customers, parts three motor etc, buying from steve Timmins you went the right rout, you will have everything the first time. Kevin |

Kevin,
I am buying the motor from Bill Verburg. He is having Timmins do his new motor so it was shipped from Timmins place but he is not helping me. Bill upgraded his 3.6 conversion motor to a 3.8 and I got the motor and all the old bits. It was in his SC so I hope that the connection is the same but now I wonder?? Saw your old posts but the details on this one are excellent to boot! Joe

Got a Sach's sport clutch from Timmins and will be keeping my SSI HE's for now. Trying to do this without restorting to breaking the bank and could not afford replacing everything. Will go with SSI's when they make a system for the 3.6 motor.
Only thing I have to buy yet is the front cooler to run with my fender cooler and the throttle cable. Plan on using Chuck Morelands front cooler and hose system at this time but open to suggestions. Bill has forgotten more about 911's than I know... a real gent and very good asset on this forum. Joe

Joe, I think you'll find there is a difference in the pinout between Bill's 3.0L and your Carrera, on the chassis side of the 14 pin connector. I looked at my brother-in-laws '84 and it was significantly different than my SC. You might have to do some legwork here, I have the engine (964) side of the 14 pin connector if you want it.

Rob,
Thanks and Pls save it for me, might need it! Will know in a week I hope. Paul, Have not talked to the guys at SSI in a while but heard 6-9 months ago that something was in the works but no firm timetable. I am 3 miles away from B&B's shop but still would rather use the SSI product unless they are going to take forever to get it in the works. Thanks for the heads up though and will see what I can find out this week. Joe

Joeaksa i tried the 993 oe headers made a jig and turned the flanges etc, i just wasnt happy with it heat was way off of my 964 heat work, so if you go with 993 headers i have a jig you can use. I found a set of 1 5/8 headers on this BBS used at a fair price, I believe it has cleaned the engine up a bunch. If you have stock 3.2 exhaust and exchangers this will be the best fitting inexpensive way to go. Jack o had a set forsale. I know this set up looses some HP, but is enough to worry about? my car will return to be being driven daily or almost daily 8 months a year so this small HP loss wouldnt really have been a issue with me, if you have an inspection the 3.2 stuff should pass it. Did you ask steve if there is anything else you need? If you dont get the instructions with your motor one of us will copy and email it to you, Kevin

Kevin,
Thanks and I will live with the SSI's for now. A few HP loss with the small tubing will not hurt and the torque will be better. I am in an area where they do not do inspections for now but know what you mean. Timmins has helped a bit and the others on the forum have been excellent so hope to not have any problems. Will stay in touch! Thx, Joe

Does anyone know the sizes of the fuel line that needs to be made on the conversion? I understand that there needs to be an additional fuel line going to the right side of the motor.
If anyone has the sizes (assume its a metric fitting on each end) would really appreciate the information. Pulling the 3.2 tomorrow... Rob, Do you just take the 14 pin plug apart and match the colors? Got the schematic you sent and it really helps but not sure what the changes are. Assume its still a 14 pin plug but with the wiring in a different position. Thx, Joe

Joeaksa the line is 5 feet long, you will need one end to match fuel filter out and the other the fuel line in on the passenger side of the motor, you will also need a return hose from the drivers side to the steel line, Kevin

Kevin,
Thanks and any idea on the sizes of the fittings? I have a place locally who will make the hoses up but need the size. Can take the fuel filter off and carry it there but do not want to take the motor fuel rail off. Thx, Joe
