misalignment 915 input shaft?

I am overhauling the 915 from my non modified matching numbers 1986 3.2 targa
While all the other gears are perfectly aligned (red arrow), there is a 4.5mm overshoot (yellow arrow) of the input shaft pinion against the 1st gear on the gear shaft. This is not a result of my re-assembly skills cause it was there before I worked on it too. I just had not noticed. The wear on the pinion teeth shows that this overshoot remains once the case is back on.
Is this 'normal'?

The offset is normal.

thanks guys, this is my first 915 tear down, so I lack some confidence hence double check everything ;-)
