Rebuild or sell
I have a 1980 sc ROW, I just picked up a 3.2 engine. My 3.0 needs a top end. Is there any value keeping my 3.0, for originality sake? Or just sell it and enjoy the 3.2.

I’d keep it. One day you might want to make a sweet twin plugged, twin turbo monster. And the car will be matching numbers. If that really matters…

I made the mistake listening to my wife and sold my 2.7. It too needed a top end rebuild. I dropped a 3L in and it's by far more reliable. I hauled that 2.7 in each of my 3 moves to new houses and at the 4th one the wife talked me into selling it. so I sold it for a song and a dance back then... like 12 yrs ago. While i don't think i would have put it back in the car, I prob would have rebuilt it for the day when I and if I decide to sell my 74. Personally I would not buy a 911 with a 2.7 with it's known probs but that yr is getting up there and i find owners don't drive them often like they use to. the 3.0L is a gem, been in there for 30 years so what can I say? My $0.02.

What is the type number? If it's a 930/10 keep it and build it. You might like it as much as the 3.2

Why would matching numbers matter, if it's been twin plugged and twin turbo'ed?
Personally, I see the CIS engines as the least desirable to keep original. But there is definitely a contingent that sees them as treasures. Just look at the prices for CIS components. I think the 3.2 upgrade is a smart, simple move. EFI and more displacement. If your SC is all original and in very good condition, then some future buyer might see the numbers matching engine as desirable, when you go to sell it. Do you have the room to store it? Or are you just going to put it outside, behind the garage, in the weather? My two cents and worth even less. Michael J. |

Save the 40 year old exhaust too...and the original tie rods, fixed spring plates, leaky AC condenser, crappy reciprocal compressor, steering wheel...save it all...for when you sell.....and never ever never paint any of the car....no matter how many rock chips you get...and if you do, strip it down to bare metal...no 180-200 grit sand to primer business gotta be BARE metal....and for sure no turbo tail or chin spoilers unless they were on the factory order option sheet....remove the passenger side mirror also if it wasn't on the option sheet and forget about that Sachs Power clutch or adjustable spring plates!

Hmmm, only enjoy the car based solely on what people may value when you go sell it? Hard pass. I'll modify my car with the desire to build the best tool for my driving style. The next guy can have my SC when I'm in the ground or too senile to care.
To the OP, sure, I save the spare/removed parts. That long block has a lot of value as the basis to build a proper hotrod. As for "originality sake", don't bother. The car is worth more with a good 3.2 than a worn out numbers matching 3.0 and the next guy likely won't care where the 3.0 went.

If you sell it, you won't have it any more.

If it becomes illegal to have a non original engine itll be a problem. But I would say under normal circumstances the next owner would probably sell the engine right away and it wont increase the value of the car enough to warrant keeping it. That said I would keep it and probably put it in my 914

Who cares what you do with the car. If the original engine you have is a 930/10, it's a great engine that any 911 owner would love to have.

Shrink-wrap the original engine on a pallet and store it until you decide what you really want. The 3.2 is a great move and you will be very happy with that upgrade.

I'm in Los Angeles and you are 100% correct. Our cars will be huge match box cars in a garage to look at. Unless we convert them to electric. Which I have seen a electric 1976 911 years ago.

Also, On a 3.2ss can I use the same heads from my 3.0? Or do I need to find 3.2 heads? |

There are piston and cylinder sets for doing a 3.2ss and they use the 3.0 heads.
That said, your '80 heads have smaller ports than the '78 & '79s. And that is just the tip of the iceberg for variations on the 3.2ss. What compression? What octane do you want to buy? Are you willing to go with twin plugs, or a wedged dome on the pistons? Do you plan on upgrading the cams? Will they be too aggressive, requiring replacing the CIS. Do you replace that with 6 carbs or an upgrade to EFI? Slippery slope ahead! What happened to your 3.2 replacement plan? |
