A/C Gurus -- Need Some Help Please!
 

I'm considering replacing the a/c compressor in my 84 with a rotary compressor. These are my questions:

1. Is the Sankyo (Sanden) SD-507 a rotary compressor?
2. Is it a 12 volt or 24 volt compressor?
3. If it's a 24 volt, why would someone try to use it on a Porsche?
4. Will it even fit on the 3.2 in my 84?
5. Can I rebuild it myself?

I have a Sanden in my 88 but I don't know the specific model. It came with a modified mounting bracket since the factory mount won't work with the Sanden.

The Sanden SD507 is a rotary compressor with a 12 volt clutch. I have fitted them to early (69-73) 911's with mechanical injection. I would have to believe you could fit one to a 3.2l motor. The only thing I believe that is rebuildable would be the shaft seal between the compressor and clutch body. Good luck!

I also have a Sanden rotary on my 83SC but am not sure of the model. It was changed by the PO. Definately 12 V. For fit, I think the important thing is the mounting bracket or adapter plate. The Pelican 911 Tech Articles have good info on Posche AC, as well as griffiths.com, procooler.com, and www.rpm.com.au/911/ . If your running R134, you should replace the old hoses with new barrier hose. It's a dirty job but not that hard or expensive if you get bulk hose from a local AC or hose shop and have your existing fittings crimped on the new hose. The consensus for cold AC in a 911 seems is to be either a 993 fender mounted condenser unit (with fan) and/or under body. IMHO, the 993 condenser is the way to go if you can finda used one at a decent price.

The Sanden is a "wobble-plate" design (not rotary) which is similar to the Nippondenso swash plate compressor you have on your car now (assuming your's is OEM).

Jmohn is correct the Sanden is not a rotary compressor, and neither is a Nippondenso, only the Seiko-Seiki is a true rotary compressor.
