I posted a thread a while back regarding adding a hand throttle to my SC for cheap cruise control. looks like i might be able to go with the real thing.
I have the opportunity to grab a factory cruise control "brain" and actuator for about $100CAD. Apparently I also need clutch switch and cruise lever (of course). Any other parts needed? Has anyone added factory cruise to their SC? I am told my 79SC has the wiring already, so I am hoping with the right gear I can tack it on with minimal sweat with the boards help!! I have heard things about vacuum hoses - what's the deal with these? i.e. i don't want to drop the engine for this one. thanks

I just did this over the winter. What I would reall reccommend if finding a NOS cruise kit, and go that route. Parts Obsolete has them on ebay periodicaly, but any cruise kit would work. I wouldn't particularly reccommend the factory route (I looked into this originally) since you can't be a 100% sure of the funcitonality of the parts.

thanks for your input - how did the addition go? painless i hope? how many hours approx? Factory vs. aftermarket: if it could be guaranteed that the factory parts are OK, would you go with them or would you still go with aftermarket? are their other advantages to an aftermarket cruise kit? thanks

Well, I'd say overall, plan 8 hours. Mostly cause there's some engine work, under the car work, and a lot in the cabin (colum swtich, etc). There's a lot of repositioning that takes time.
Given my choice, I'd still do the aftermarket. It's the more "full featured" cruise like we are use to now - resume, set. accell, slowdown, etc. not all cruises are created equal (to my shock). It actually looks pretty factory anyway.. the only thing is most of the older kits have a chrome stalk, so I'd just flat black it, and no one will be the wiser. Chuck

no engine drop required then I assume?
![]() I will look into other kits as you suggested thanks. quick question - what about the vacuum hookups for the actuator? forgive my ignorance but does the 3.0L on my SC have allowances for the vacuum hookup, or are there mods required? i.e. is there a nice little nipple for the actuator vacuum hose waiting for me? thanks

Actually, thats the one problem I have had. I couldn't find an always on vaccume line on an 80 SC. (I asked around here, no-one seemed to know).
I used the vaccum line to the master cylinder, which I'm not real happy with, until I can find a better solution. Maybe I'll do another post, now that I think about it. Good luck! pm me if you have any questions.. Chuck

Shawzy, if you decide to go the aftermarket route, I may want the Cruise brain if available. I will check my SC and try to determine where the vac line is connected for you and clnilsen.

thanks guys!
I will let you know jdowty if the brain is up for grabs - i will try and nail down another for you however if you like - my guy may have some more available. sounds like the newer aftermarket PID-type brains are a bit smoother from a controls perspective - they take into account more variables in order to manage speed apparently so i am tempted to install one. not sure if the ol' SC wire-harness can handle it though. how does (or did) your current cruise work? decent at maintaining speed on flat i assume, hills ok too? i only use the set feature and don't bother with resume, coast, etc. etc. vacuum line help always appreciated - along with any pics you may have onthe pc already
