Just been driving the crap out of the car post the transmission, brakes, and suspension work that took up the start of the season. Man o man it is fun to build a relationship with these cars!

Chasing down a fuel smell in the cabin after fill up right now. Just ordered some parts from our host to hopefully make quick work of that.

awesome thread! Kind of makes me want to do one for my car just so I can track progress in one place.

Please post if you figure out the fuel smell in the cabin post fill up, my 86 does the same thing right now.

You are spot on - half the reason I am doing this is for that very reason.

Parts should show up next week. Starting simply with gas cap and the hoses in and out of the evap tanks which reek of gas after fill up. Wish me luck!!

Sometimes it’s the little things.

Early after acquiring the car I replaced the drivers door seal due to wind noise and threw the original out (which I now know throwing anything original out is a no no)!!

Well - since then it has been a total PIA to close the door and it lost its nice Porsche “thud”.

I have been on the hunt for a nice used seal and stumbled on this.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1727884512.jpg

Received it yesterday and after a 1 min install I have the “thud” back. Is it wierd it makes me smile to shut my drivers door now?!!?!

Like I said - the little things.

I also had the fuel smell after filling up. The source was a crack in the braze joint of the filler pipe nipple that the rubber hose connects to.

The journey continues.

Fuel smell - I replaced the breather hoses in the trunk which were all still original and smelled very strong after fill up. And - more to come below……

Brought the car in for an oil change, and for the injectors to be checked and resealed.

On the injector front all checked out fine but when they pulled the car back into the shop after a test drive they noticed a small trail of fluid.

Turns out - the fuel pump had been leaking ever so slightly and completely opened up while at the shop.

New fuel pump and new breather hoses = no more fuel smell! Not sure how long the pump was leaking!

Also - while the car was on the shop I had them dig into a small popping that showed up at idle. Peek at this video to hear it.

https://youtube.com/shorts/KGzey1eLqig?si=ZqGN11aJpp7UWfEL

They found a few vacuum leaks they fixed but also stated that the intake runner gasket on cylinder 6 is leaking (found by spraying brake fluid). I opted to pick up the car and am thinking about tackling all of the intake gaskets myself. To that end - are they a complete pain in the butt to replace with the motor in the car, or doable?

New updates.

Continuing to put in the miles before winter approaches and one day on my way home from work it started running really rough.

Made me think of the early days when it was only running on 6 so I checked to ensure the plug wires were all tight.

Wouldn’t you know it - another Spark plug wire end snapped! This is the second end that has simply broken while driving the car on a set of Beru’s that were installed 2 years back :(!

This one is on the passenger side and harder to reach - so I am not looking forward to getting the upper valve cover off to get the part out stuck on the plug.

Ordered a new end which should come this week - until then Maverck sits…….

That's a beautiful SC you have!
But.... What brand are those brake discs!?
Are they for an SC, or are they "modified" from another model? I love them… :)

Thanks!!

To be honest I am not sure. They were on the car when we bought it a few years back. I really like them too so I guess it’s a happy accident.

Good to know on the fuel stuff, I am going to take my carpets out and check mine out. Also think I am going to take the plunge and start one of these threads of my own. Done way too many small things to mine to keep track of, I'd love to have it all in one place!

ramonesfreak 11-14-2024 05:45 PM

What exactly was the source/cause of the popping sound?

I suspected it was rotting vent hoses in the trunk which smelled pretty strong if I put my nose up to them (so that was likely part of it) and I replaced those.

However the main source was the fuel pump was leaking! It was found when I had it in the shop for something else and it just opened up and started dumping fuel on the ground when they pulled it into the garage by chance. I suspect it was seeping a bit for a bit.

So now - with those two things addressed no more smell!

My shop thinks it is due to increased crankcase pressure due to one of the intake runners leaking. However - when the spark plug wire fully broke it got worse / louder. To that end I am hoping when I put the new wire end on it resolves itself.

I will report back with results!!

PeteKz 11-16-2024 08:14 PM

Increased crankcase pressure would have nothing to do with exhaust popping. An intake runner leaking would have nothing to do with crankcase pressure. How much do you trust this shop? I wouldn't.

Sounds like you got a set of those faulty Beru wires. Order a set of Clewetts (available from Pelican) and toss those Berus in the trash.

Also, it sounds like your fuel system is original. Google is your friend - there are lots of threads on what to replace, but you want to replace at a minimum the two lines going from the rear bulkhead to the engine (return) and fuel filter (supply). Later SCs are metal but yours are rubber. When they fail there's a good chance it BBQs the car.

I am likely going to make the change to Clewett’s. Two more ends broke at the end of the season last year and I just got around to replacing them last night. Thinking about it while driving this am at 20 degrees (and the fact they broke late in the season last year) I wonder if the faulty wires are susceptible to the cold and the temp fluctuations that come with that.

I will say - it feels good to get back behind the wheel!

Fuel system was one of the first things that was addressed. Prior to me buying the car they put in a new tank and tunnel lines. Shortly after I purchased it, the rubber lines in the engine bay starts popping holes!

My last tune up on the fuel system is to replace all of the hard lines under the hood - more to cleanup the engine bay - with a set I snagged out of the classifieds.

More to come on this. Now that spring has arrived in MN (and I did a horrible job of doing anything on the car over the winter) I am motivated to get this sorted next. Will report back as soon as I have more info.

I did find out that the popping is actually coming up through the air box, and coming through the pop off valve.

——————————————

Also, watching YouTube vids on SCs I came across someone calling out this simple little part as a need for many SCs.

https://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/smart/more_info.cgi?pn=311-881-247-OEM

My car has had a loose seat adjuster that continually falls out since I purchased it. Now with this installed - no more issues!

As mentioned before - the little things are continuing to add up!

Mav- How are you liking the taller 5th gear? Considering the same thing on my '86. Would be nice to have a more comfortable cruiser gear on the highway.

Where did you source yours?

On the rebuild I didn't end up doing it. There was a delay in sourcing it and it was quite a bit more money. With the total bill of the rebuild and a few other things in front of me I just ended up doing the stock 5th gear.

I will say - I am LOVING the fully rebuilt tranny, with a Rennshift on top. Such a transformed driving experience from when I first got the car with a tranny on the way out and overly sloppy stock shifter.

So - first day in the official spring weather of driving the car into the office today. So awesome to start putting miles back on her.

And then, on the drive home she started running a bit sluggish, and rough at idle. You will never guess what happened.........

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1742863820.jpg

Another one broke! Clewett's are officially on order, and I am going to have to find a way to give these Beru's the Office Space treatment!!!

Michael: I have the tall 5th gear in my 915 transmission with the 8:31 R&P. I love it. I turn about 3000RPM at 80MPH, which I think is very relaxed. My 1973 weighs 2330 lbs empty, so even with tall gearing, I can easily pass and go up steep hills without downshifting.

Honestly, Pelican should just stop selling the Berus until whatever is going on is fixed.
