@maverck - I explored the smoke test questions myself. Here's the approach I'm taking, and the DIY smoke generator I fab'd with less than $20 of parts...

Yes - I still have the wrong WUR on the car. I was sent an 090 from Tony and when I installed it, the car ran worse - no further pickup past 3k RPM. It is hard to describe - the car just felt slow throughout the entire RPM band. Talking to Tony we think likely other components in the CIS system are having issues - and I am planning to start another thread to work through this particular troubleshooting.

On the CIS troubleshooting, I am starting with:
-Fixing the oxygen sensor male plug, and hooking this back up
-Performing a smoke test. Doing a bunch of searching on the forums for the best/easiest way to do this

Brian,

Could you check the following CIS components installed on your engine for me?
  • What is the fuel distributor ID on the tag?
  • On the intake runners, it would be either -2R or -4R. Which one you have?

Is your Oxygen sensor connected and working with your ECU. And the FV (frequency valve) operational? Frequency valve and enrichment relays both tested OK? Ask your mechanic about them.

I have a strange feeling the previous owner had installed parts just to make the motor run to sell the car. Hope I am wrong. Keep us posted.

Tony

The oxygen sensor is not connected. The male plug is disintegrated and I have a new one on order. I will work through your other questions and get answers posted here! We WILL get this thing sorted! Appreciate your help as always Tony!

Thank you so much for the link! I have to imagine the car has some vacuum leaks since all of the fuel lines just started breaking down, so definitely feel a smoke test is in order.

Brian,

Fuel leaks are serious problems but easy to locate and identify. Avoid running the motor until you fix all the fuel leaks and just test run the FP to pressure test the system. It would be safe and prudent to replace old and brittle fuel lines in your car. Expensive but better than having an engine fire while you are driving.

First, determine if the fuel leaks are coming from the fittings and none from the fuel hoses. You have both metal and flexible fuel lines in your SC. Replace them as needed. Take your time and enjoy the experience getting this car back to the road. Keep us posted.

The work on Maverck continues - as I work to simply enjoy putting on miles this summer!

Next up was the shifter. My wife got me a Rennshift unit for Christmas and I finally decided to get things installed. As you can see in the photos the main shaft bushing was more than shot!!

I have a coupler that I still need to install - however thus far this is my favorite upgrade to the vehicle. The drivability is SO MUCH better!!!

Speaking of putting miles on - she sure looked pretty under the sun when I grabbed some morning coffee yesterday!

Were all biased but they look pretty, just about anywhere. Good thread.

Haven’t posted in a while - two new small projects completed as I keep picking at the vehicle.

About a month or so back the fuel gauge stopped at a quarter tank. It has been problematic since I got the car last fall but always started working again. This time it did not!

New sender from our host and about 10 mins of work and I am back in business. The one I removed looked to be the original.

Project number two was making it a bit safer to take my girls in the car with me - so they care share in the passion!

I had tried all sorts of different things and ultimately could not mount a car seat as tight as I wanted to - and I stumbled across a thread when someone used race harness mounts for a latch car seat connector.

To that end here is where I landed.

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-brey_krause-parts/pair-of-outside-lap-belt-mounts/r-9201~brk/

I installed these hooks in the seat belt mount in the rear. I could hook a latch strap to them but still could not get it tight enough so the seat didn’t jiggle.

So I switched out the latch strap and used a small ratchet strap which allowed me to get it REALLY tight. Is it perfect or as safe as a new car - nope! Does the car seat move at all now - it does not and is safe enough for us to do some short rides!

So - now that the days are getting shorter, I need to use the headlights a bit more and the other day on the way to work, I smelled a bit of electrical burning which - of course - made me freak out a bit!

After some troubleshooting I narrowed it down to the dreaded headlight wiring! I ordered the new JWest full re-wire kit to get me back on the road. I decided to go with their new high power kit to fully replace the wires up to the H4s, as the smell was coming from the wiring up under the trunk.

https://www.jwestengineering.com/911-Headlight-High-Power-Relay-Set_p_74.html

Overall the kit was SUPER impressive for a clean install. I usually am pretty intimidated doing wiring and it is never as clean as I want it to be - however with this kit and their extensive instruction video it came out very clean, and exceeded my expectations.

Here is the fully installed relay block. Furthermore in the headlight buckets in the other images, I am assuming the discoloration is due to just how hot the old wires were getting!!!

Thats not bad, my plug was crispy critters i replaced it with a ceramic one i found online. The brown by the grommets is not from heat its the paint reacting with the petrol in the grommet.

Next project up - heat back date. I acquired all of the parts from our host months back, however now that it is getting colder in MN I figured it was time.

With the car coming out of HI, the PO had removed all of the heating equipment. Here is how it started.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1695254411.jpg

The drivers side was a piece of cake. The inlet did not fit snug up to the fan, but with the minor massaging it fit to my liking.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1695254411.jpg

The passenger side was a whole other beast. First off the back 10MM bolt on the AC mounting bracket is interesting to get to! Second, one of the mounting arms for the AC was in the way of the inlet pipe, so this one took some heavy massaging!

All in all I am pretty happy with it. Love how clean the final install is - and think this will be sufficient for the MN spring/fall.

Hi Maverck,

I’m in St Paul near Maplewood.

I bought an actual smoke tester when I was chasing leaks on my car. Let me know if you want to use it.

Best,
Rutager

I may have to take you up on that! I am certain I have to have a leak or two given the condition of many other old rubber hoses on the car.

maverck 03-09-2024 01:20 PM

Just a report back on my previous posts - the backdate heat was plenty sufficient for me in the cold fall weather in MN. Did a fall color tour - about 250 miles and only 40-50 out and my wife and I were very toasty!

Also - finally back at it.

Rather than working on the car I have been accumulating parts over the winter in MN. I noticed that street cleaners are starting to run, and it is making me antsy to drive. The most pressing project on the list has been brakes - as I had a mysterious leak late last fall where I was losing fluid and I used it as an excuse to clean things up across the board.

First up is rebuilt calipers and checking out the lines. The old ones had some broken seals as you can see.
