Busted clutch - again!
I have a 1970 911E and the clutch pedal dropped to the floor. The last time it happened was 3 years ago - same problem this time - the pin that the clutch fork turns on had snapped off. No big deal the part is $36, engine is on the floor and I'm cleaning it up and fixing oil leaks.
My question is - when I remount the transmission should I put grease on the tube the thrust bearing slides on or should it be cleaned and left dry? Thanks

Do you mean the throw out bearing? If so, I would lube it. Just a little lube. A dry clutch mech is not a good thing.

OK - the throw out bearing. Thanks for the reply - my concern is that over a period of time a lot of dust comes off the clutch which could mix with the grease and wind up creating a resistance instead of lubrication. I wonder what Porsche did when they built the cars?

I think a little lube is good and I think Porsche agrees with me. ;-)

Are you guys implying that you lube/pack the TO bearing or just lightly grease the guide tube?

In the words of the inimitable John Walker, "Grease is always good." Just a little on the guide tube, and anything else that slides, including the cable itself. White lithium grease is commonly used on bellhousing parts. That sticky, stringy amber grease is used in stuff like doors that may never see grease again. It would be good for clutch cables too.

Have you considered installing the chrome-moly replacement ball pin (pivot bolt)? I got about three years out of a stock replacement and have since switched to the chrome-moly pin. It's only been a year, but it hasn't sheared yet! I think they are only $10 more than the stock pin.
