removing '88 Carrera battery advice needed

Can anybody advise on how to get this
dang 50lb. sucker out of its compartment?
Specifically, do I need to remove the blower
housing sitting right in front of it to turn 1/64"
clearance into a full inch?

I heard that Interstate makes a golf cart battery
that's smaller, lighter and can be installed within
the wheelbase if anyone is interested i'll track it
down.

Thanks mucho,

Tom

The previous owner of my 83SC put in a battery that looked like it was sized for a tank,it was way too big and I didn't think I could get it out but I did without removing the AC blower,I basically lifted the front and then did some wiggling to get it out.I replaced with a red top Optima, never have that problem again.

undo the front hold-down clamp, move the battery forward so the rear lip is free from it's retaining notch, lift up the rear of the battery and pull to the center of the car at the same time. push a few wire looms out of the way as you work it out, and there you have it. no need to remove the condenser blower.

I just installed a SLA Odyssey PC680 with SAE terminals in my '89. The car is an F-Class racer and daily driver. Fabbed an aluminum bracket and layed the battery on it's side. No starting problems down to freezing here in South Texas so far. It weighs 50lb less than the original super brick.

Good Luck!

If you have the toolkit that comes with the car, there's a long allen head tool to remove the clamp that John's talking about.

The huge battery is size 49 (49/93?)...and a more reasonable size ( 48/91 ?) is available to fit the next-smaler mounting hole.

Yep, you can remove even that giant sized battery without taking anything else out, it just takes some creative maneuvering.

Tomnet, no need to be in any way apologetic:

(1) because YOU put on the board the very question I'd wanted to ask for ages, but never dared to ask BECAUSE I feared that the board members would think "Gosh, this Belgik's stupid".

(2) and...welcome!

Yes, this board ROCKS!

Hey Paul:
My business occasionally requires me to be in Olen, Belgium. Are you close to that..or maybe are you across the country and more south near Spa-Franchorchamps ??

Yes, this battery takes some creative positioning and strong arms. I believe the Interstate one-to-one replacement battery is the same one used for the older Mercedes Diesels.

BTW, having a bit of weight up front may not be a bad thing.

Sears has a Die Hard in their "international series" that fits the specs and fits right in. Same dimensions, etc.

Chuck-
would you happen to know the model and/or dimensions of that Die Hard?

Steve, it is Sears Die Hard International Series, Group 49. Part number is PS 22831249. Dimensions are 13 1/2 (L), 6 5/8 (w), and 6 7/8 (h). It fits perfectly in the 87 and is specified in the Sears reference book for that model and year. I have always had good luck with the Die Hards and use them in all of our automobiles. Hope this info helps. Chuck..

I too am a closet "afraid to ask how to remove a battery" person.

Thanks Tom.

I've wrestled that big Interstate in and out a few times. It's a bad angle for leaning and lifting IMO. Try to support yourself to avoid back injury!

If you care, you may wish to tape some cardboard ( or similar) to the fuel cell to avoid scuffing the paint on it. Cheers. Ray

The smaller 48/91 fits better than the diesel-sized 49 as OEM. Simply uses the next-down mounting hole for the front hold-down clamp. Plenty big enough. Interstate makes a nice one.
