911 steering rack rebuild - can't find bushings

I am in the process of rebuilding my steering rack (1978 911 SC) and have decided to replace the 45 year old bearing sleeves the rack rides on, one in each end of the rack. It is part number 19 in the diagram, and the Porsche part number is 91434701701.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find these anywhere.




Does anyone know of an alternate source for these or any suggestions for replacement?

Rack rebuild thoughts

Hi Mopar,
Have a look at the numerous rack rebuild threads. There is a lot of good help on offer there, including one or two guys that have had bushings made or sourced.
The stock lower pinion bearing is "open", that is, you can see daylight through the bearing, it is not sealed, or "shielded". IMHO, the bearing is the lowest point on the rack and all the moisture and debris will migrate there, so a fully sealed bearing is cheap insurance - especially at a cost of $5 or $10 more for the sealed bearing.
The "Turbo Tie Rods" incorporate an aluminum stop, so the rack will not over travel and damage the end bushings, or the pinion teeth, or rack itself. This is not an optional spacer.
It is important to counter-hold the rack when tightening or loosening the tie rod ends - otherwise, the pinion teeth will take the stress of tightening. IIRC, a 1-1/16th open end wrench willfit well if the sides of the "jaws" are ground down a bit.
Similarly, It is helpfull to hold the pinion flange, when tightening the nut, otherwise, the pinion will run to the end of the rack, and bind the pinion teeth, likely causing damage to the teeth.
Since the rack is an infrequently serviced and critical safety component, it makes sense to use some high quality grease.
