964 RS Carpet Installation - Hood release??

I started removal of the original carpet and sound padding on my buddies car and ran into a bit of snag.. It appears as though the 964 hood release bolts on top of a small section of carpet with vinyl attaching to the door hinge post.. This is slightly different than the 79 coupe I just completed as the leather doesn't go all the way up to the dash pads.

I've attached two photos of the 964 area in question...do I need to remove the dash pads to remove and replace the vinyl and carpet??

Here is the same area in the 79' Notice how the vinyl only comes up to the knee pad

As I recall there are 2 bolts that go in from the side(where the drivers foot would be) they are a PIA to deal w/
