Fuel Pump
I am replacing the AC items on 3.2 Carrera so will have to drop the pan. While I'm in there replacing lines I was thinking of doing the fuel pump which I already have on the shelf.
Currently have half a tank, from experience can I crimp the line either with a vice grip and 2 coins which I have done on other cars, or use a fuel line cut off collar to crimp the line. Don't want to get in there and I get a gusher when it should be a trickle. |

I replaced my fuel pump last week. I crimped the line between the gas tank and fuel pump. Didn’t loose a drop out of that line. But obviously, a small amount of fuel will come out of the fuel pump and from the other line.

Is there something wrong with your fuel pump?

Fuel pump is 40 years old and the check valve isn't working as good as it should. I currently have replaced all my fuel lines with mason ones, and have the intake fully off the car so doing what I can now as its been untouched basically since 84. Its basically a survivor car, with the main items original. I just figured I'm in there and wont be in there for a long time just do it all while its up on stands.

Yes. I replaced mine a few months ago and used hose pliers to clamp the line from the tank into the pump. I kept a bowl underneath just in case and probably lost a couple of tablespoons of fuel at most.

When I clamped my short hose from the tank to the pump, it split and had a leak. That little hose is original and old, and needs to be replaced. Once it is off the pump, just drain into a gas can. If you don’t have enough cans, pour some of it into your other cars.
And be positive the replacement is Ethanol proof Teflon lined hose of the metric size. Good luck finding it. It is a challenge.

I still have about 10 gallons in the tank. Ill make a call when I'm replacing the AC lines and see what the fuel line looks like.

Gh85,
Good tip on the old fuel line.!!! My line was only about 2 years old so I did not have a problem.

If the old fuel pump is still working, you can easily drain the fuel tank by bridging the fuel pump relay and opening the fuel lines in the engine compartment and adding a long enough hose into fuel cans.

I think I will do the fuel pump later on when I have only5 gallons or less in the tank so I can drain into a single container and use the gas for the lawnmowers and refill with fresh. Then I can replace the lines.
